Munich: need a hotel for a 2-night stay

I may go to Munich in December for two nights. This will not be a sighseeing/vacation trip, so I need a decent hotel around $70/night just to spend two nights, preferably close to public transportation and/or Munich Hauptbahnhof train station. Any recomendations?

I stayed at the Astoria, but it may be a little higher than your $70 figure.
The room was fine and the breakfast was outstanding. The hotel itself is small, but well managed. The staff was most courteous and spoke enough English to get the job done.
It is located near the Giselastrasse Ubahn station, two stops north of Odeons Platz station. I found it convenient.
try www.placestotstay.com

Hotel Kurpfalz
Schwanthalerstrasse 21
D-80339 Munchen
Phone: (089) 5409860
http://www.munich-hotels.com/
Clean, white comforters, TV, phone, and bathroom for 100DM/night for a double. Great buffet style
breakfast included in price--eggs, baked lima beans, bread, sliced meats and cheeses, yogurt, cereal, orange juice, etc. Very good deal. All the
desk attendants speak english and reception is 24 hours. About 15 minute walk from station.

There is an InterCity located right at the Hauptbahnhof. Can't be beat for convenience. However, it may be above your price range.

Worth checking the Munich Marriott...I got (year ago) a special internet rate that worked out to about $88. Good location close to Englisher Garten and U-bahn stop just a block away. Nice hotel and in very quiet area.

Hotel Torbrau is close to Hauptbahnhof. I've stayed there twice and it's nice. I don't know what the rates are now, but it's always been a medium priced hotel and a good value.

Emily

I have stayed at the Hotel Alfa 4 times and always had a good stay. Not fancy, but clean & nice. Close to the train station, they have a bar, breakfast, and a great staff.

I believe it is on Hirtenstrasse.

The Europaischer Hof is a decent hotel across from the train station on Bayerstrasse with a variety of rooms available and seems to cater to business people. Good breakfast, too. website:
http://www.heh.de/e

HOTEL STACHUS near Karlstor/Neumarkt. A single room costs 130-140 DM(as close as I can get to the $70 budget). Excellent price & location for oldtown Munich where all the shops are and still walking distance to the Hauptbahnhof. Highly recommend staying in the oldtown over the bahnhof area.

Check the more recent threads on Munich hotels. Lots of good suggestions !
Old town area , espec. Karlsplatz is easy walking distance from main train station. we had stayed at Hotel Daniel , great location to Marienplatz, publ. transportation, train station , shopping, dining, etc. Munich was great !

I always throw in a vote for Hotel Uhland, which is located across the street from the Oktoberfest park site, but is a quick walk away from the train station. The staff speaks English and are very friendly. And the rooms are about $65 US, I think.

http://www.hotel-uhland.de/enwelcome.html

We stayed at the Uhland this summer. It is very convenient to public transportation. I have also stayed several times at the Europaischer Hof which is just across the street from the Hauptbahnhof. It might be more convenient if the weather is bad. Both have excellent breakfast buffets.

Stayed at the Hotel Uhland 5 years ago and have recommended it on this site ever since. Great location, near everything but tucked away in a nice residential area. Great breakfast buffet. I still remember sleeping on top of feather beds and under a down comforter- like sleeping on a cloud!
