Hotel Kurpfalz at www.munich-hotels.com - - excellent price, satisfactory location; more than adequate features and comfort level.

Dora: We stayed at the Hotel Uhland Garni on Uhland Stasse last summer. Nice place, good location and a great breakfast. It was recommended to us right here on this website.

It's around $100.00 per night for a double. We booked right on the web at SMTP: [email protected]. Bridgette Effinger operates the hotel and is a gracious hostess.

Warning about Hotel Uhland - I exchanged e mails and THOUGHT that we had reservations. We arrived on Friday evening and although they had the emails printed out that we sent them they did not think that we wanted to reserve a room?!?!? The only two rooms available were with a water bed or two single beds. Needless to say we did not stay there and were VERY disgusted and aggrevated seeing that it was 9:00 pm at night by the time this confusion about our reservations was sorted out.

Dora-
Here are some pensions relatively close to the Bahnhof. They all have doubles with and without a bath in the room. Of course all with bath are more expensive. The first one is closer to the Deutsches Museum (maybe 1 KM) while the rest are closer to the Bahnhof but 2-3 Km from the Deutsches Museum.

Almost all are in the 80-100 Dm range for a double without bath. The bath is usually down the hall and it is usually free. Those with in-room baths go up about 25 -35 % in price.

Beck (One of the best values cost wise)
Thierschstr. 36
tel. 22 07 08
fax 22 09 25

Flora ( ~ 3 blocks north of the Bahnhof)
Karlstr. 49
Tel. 59 70 67
fax 59 41 35

All of the rest are south within 2 to 6 blocks of the Bahnhof

Erika
Landwehrstr. 8
Tel. 55 43 27

Mariandl (I understand that this has been renovated so the prices may have gone up)
Goethestr. 51
Tel. 53 41 08
Fax 543 84 71

Mirabell
Landwehrstr. 42
Tel. 59 74 79
fax 550 37 01

Schillerhof
Schillerstr. 21
Tel. 59 42 70
fax 550 18 35

Utzelmann (Strong recommendation from Rick steves)
Pettenkoferstrasse 6
Tel. 59 48 89
Fax 59 62 28

There is a room finding service on the south side of the Bahnhof next to a little bank called Euraid that can usually find reasonably priced rooms. If you get there before lunch I would venture to say that you won't have any problem getting a room (except during Oktoberfest). The best place to exchange money is a small office next to the Las Vegas casino . It is on the street (Bayerstrasse) which runs east toward the Stachus as you go out the south door of the train station. The TI is on your right as you go out the east exit of the train station. The TI also has a room service. Get a good map at the TI.

The TI has all of the info about tours to the castles. The best are Nueschwanstien and Linderhof. It will be an all day trip on the bus. However, depending on the number in your party, it may be cheaper to rent a car one day than to take the bus tour. Also, you could easily go to the Wieskirch and the Abby at Andochs with a car. Hertz, Avis, Europacar, etc, all have offices in the Bahnhof. If you rent, make reservations in the states before you leave. It is very expensive to make car reservations once you are in Europe.

Have a good time!

Ken gives good advice. We have always stayed in a small hotel--Hotel Schlicker--on Tal Strasse, between Marienplatz and Isartor, just around the corner from the Vicktualienmarkt. It's listed in Michelin Red Guide. Spotless, quiet, safe.

We stayed at the Pension Seibel near the Viktualienmarkt last summer. We had a double with bath for 159 DM per night (I think you can get a discount if you mention Rick Steve's guidebook), it also included a great breakfast. Here is a link to their website:
http://www.inmuenchen.de/Hotel/Pension/Seibel/

Though it can be a bit noisy the Hotel Am Markt is unbeatable for price and location, it's a block and a half from the Marienplatz and right by the Viktualienmarkt.Single 62DM.

Last year our family of 4 stayed at the Jedermann. It's a block away from the South entrance to the Hauptbahnhof. The tram (extremely easy to use) stops right in front. The 4 of us in the same room was 195 DM. At today's bank rate that's under $100 (when we went that was about $120, but still worth it). The breakfast buffet was the best we found in Germany. The hotel has an elevator which is convenient, a computer to check your E-mail and they held our baggage all day even after we checked-out. We started our vacation in Munich and by staying near the train station and having the tram so nearby, we didn't need to start paying for a rental car until it was time to leave Munich. Most of the car rental companies have pickup locations at the Hauptbahnhof. See the following websites for more info:

http://www.hotel-jedermann.de/Welcome.html

and

http://homepages.munich.netsurf.de/N...ler/munich.htm
