Certainly the Platzl, which is just a block off the Marienplatz. Some rooms are large, with a sitting area and more closet space than I've seen in most hotels. The shelves are great for accumulating shopping finds. Suggestion: pack a fold-up rolling cart to hold all the stuff you'll buy at the Christmas market. That gingerbread gets heavy fast.

Check out the Hotel Torbräu, too.

Disclaimer: I haven't stayed there myself (had a little private apartment next door), but the hotel looks good, and the location is very convenient. Does anybody know it better?

There is actually more than just one Christmas market in town.

While the market on Marienplatz is the best known (and usually a bit crowded), you will also find the historic / medieval Christmas market near Odeonsplatz (in 10min walking distance from Marienplatz).
One favorite Christmas market of the locals is in Munich's "Central Park" - the Englischer Garten. 20-30min walk from Marienplatz (or faster by subway or tram) through the Southern end of the park will take you to the Chinese pagoda (Chinesischer Turm, in German) under which the wooden stands are located. Can be quite romantic after sunset and when the park is covered with snow.

quokka,

The Torbreau is terrific. Have stayed there and will again. We REALLY like the Torbreau plus the location can't be beat.

How many Stars are you looking for? There are a bunch of 2-4 star hotels in the area around the main train station well under your price range. It is a very easy walk to Marrienplatz where you will find the big christmas markets and the crypt mart (nativity scenes) is only a block from that.

Cowboy 1968 had good suggestions for the other markets in Munich. The transportation system (U Bahn/S bahn) in Munich is very good and easy to navigate to get you around.

Depending on how much time you have you can also consider a daytrip to Nuremburg to their hugh Christmas market. You can Get the Bavaria pass for about $24 Euros that covers up to 5 people. Take a train that leaves after 9am and you will be there within an hour and a half or so. Visit the Christmas market, see Albrect Drurer's house and catch the train back for a fun day.

Try Mercure Hotel Muenchen City, it is near the Marienplatz. It was 111E last month. Nice location & hotel. We are breakfast across the street at a nice cafe, the hotel charged 13E, wasn't worth it.

We stayed at the Hotel Opera, about a 10 minute walk to Marienplatz along Maximillianstrasse - great window shopping! We loved the hotel which is on a nice quiet side street.
