Munich

We are going to be in Munich from Friday-Sunday noon in May prior to a boat trip on the Danube. What activities would you suggest? Are there trips to the mountains you would recommend?

Trains run hourly from Munich's main station to Salzburg. We recently did a nice day trip this way, leaving about 9 a.m. and returning to Munich about 8:30 p.m.

Sights/activities in Munich include; Marienplatz with the glockenspiel, the Hofbrau Haus, The Residence (museum), Nymphenburg Palace, The Neues and Altes Pinakoteks (new and old art musuems), The Deutsches Museum (technology musuem), Dachau, Englisher Garten, Olympic village, BMW museum, and a whole lot more.

Daytrips can be done to Neuschwanstein, Oberammergau, Salzburg, Garmish, etc.

You don't have time to do it all so get a Munich guidebook and choose what interests you.

While you are in Munich I recommend you have a very Bavarian dinner at the Augustiner (in the fussganger zone a couple of blocks toward the train station from Marienplatz).

In addition to Salzburg you could see Fussen and the Castles, or Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Zugspitze. Salzburg is going to be very crowded and touristy this year (Mozart's 250th birthday).

You could also include a daytrip to the Tegernsee area and possibly take a hike - a nice one leads from the village of Tegernsee to Neureuth Alm.

For a Bavarian meal in the center of town, I like Franziskaner best. In the area of Haidhausen, Unions Braeu is a bit of the beaten path and quite authentic, too.
