We have experienced first hand the spectacular eruptions from Mt. Etna. From Taormina, we took many beautiful, although distant, photos of the red lava spewing out at night, My Dad and Mom once experienced the down side of this sight, needing umbrellas to escape the soot while in the Catania area. They say these eruptions have gone on for hundreds of years in a “harmless” manner, but there have been studies that have shown increased levels of thyroid cancer among Sicilians in the areas most prone to volcanic activities.
