that's nice to know. I might have the odd moment to answer a query or two, though I'm sure that there are those here better qualified, especially for Dresden - Ingo is the go-to person there, WT.

I hope you have a great time.

annig, just getting started on your trip report. I skimmed it as I usually do with TR's and now look forward to a more thorough read. We lived there for three years in the 80's and I've already noted that you mention several of our favorite things about Germany...wine and bakeries! Unfortunately, I also remember the weather which was pretty dreary especially in the winter, but when the sun was shining, it was like a diamond and so appreciated.

So enjoyed your TR. Was looking for more. ☺ I was in Bamberg in Sept 2013 and actually tried the Rauchbier. I asked for the smallest glass they had and I still couldn't finish it. The first swallow was okay and it went downhill from there. Oh well.

Last September I spent a couple nights in Wernigerode also, at the Hotel Altora. Everyone friendly and nice except the young girl at the desk. No smile, just busy online. Had a good breakfast and an interesting restaurant. A model train runs to and from the bar along the windowsill and delivers your drinks to your table. I ate lunch in that cafeteria on the Brocken and one of the most interesting things up there was the wall display of the newspaper clippings from when they opened up the hiking trails. The wall/fence had cut the national park right in half. As you said, about the sign you saw, it was quite moving when they finally opened up all the trails again.

Also was in Hannover.....I enjoyed following the red thread....although I ended up doing it backwards. The elevator at the Rathaus and the view were awesome. I'm planning to go back this September and will take the tram to Herrenhausen...will keep in mind that it's underground. The Intercity Hotel gives you a city transportation pass so that should work for the tram out there.

One thing I discovered....the buffet/cafeteria on the top floor of the Karstad department store has really good food at reasonable prices, and a view over the city. I ate breakfast there twice, and a casual supper there also. Actually,, there's good food in the train station, too.

....anyway, your TR wasn't quite done, was it? I quite enjoyed it and hope there's more.

thanks, travisolo, for the reminder that I never finished this. Funny, I was sure that I could remember writing about the "fun" we had getting into our hotel's underground carpark in Bamberg. No? oh well, I'll have to add it to my growing list of unfinished trip reports.

i must try harder!

As many before, happily came across this report today, having previously read your hilarious Iceland report. Would love to follow in your carwheels, but as my DH does not drive (well from the back seat !!), stress levels are too high to even think about. So hope you can find the time to finish.

thanks, marandb - glad that you've enjoyed it, even though unfinished.

I will try but like Schubert, I may not succeed.
