I honestly don't know of any person who has ever said England when they were referring to visiting Edinburgh, Cardiff, etc. Most people I know whould specify Cardiff, Wales or Edinburgh, Scotland. I guess most people I know that would refer to any of these places has taken a basic geography class and knows that England does not make up the entire UK.

However, while it is not common to find mis-naming of the UK/GB on this forum, it is very common in US newspapers to find articles about the UK which use UK/GB/England interchangeably, or which refer to Tony Blair, the Prime Minister of England. I will say that, in my experience, the worst people for doing this are the English themselves.

Katie - instead of getting the political and historical lecture from those good English friends of ours, you'll probably get constant drivel about how they won the World Cup and how fantastic Johnny Wilkinson is.

For $800-900 a month you will most definitely need a flatshare or bedsit if you want to be in a decent neighborhood centrally located. you could try some of the nicer neighborhoods in south london if you want your own studio, but you might not have tube access.

Bit puzzled by david cassidy post BTilke. Firstly its got nothing at all to do with any part of this thread and secondly you shouldn't believe all you hear in the media. His comments regarding

Was said however in a jokey kind of way and it was specifically aimed at the weather and the particular rain storm he was caught up in en route to the concert from the last venue.
He was by no means rude or obnoxious.
Don't comment on what you know nothing about, the source of my information was my wife and her friend who were at the concert. First hand info ok.

Muck, lighten up!! My point was that here was yet another American who knows the difference between Wales and "that place in the UK which must not be named," contrary to the patronizing stereoptyes you and Glyn hold so dear (which is why I posted it).
However, since your family were there, I accept that his comments were taken out of context. But you and Glyn are making comments here that are much cheaper shots. If you don't know it, you should!

I am sure you will agree that the people of the UK can be as daft as anyone in any country.
I hope this thread has given everyone the opportunity to consider that the UK is certainly not one country but a fiercly patriotic group of countries within a kingdom.
I look forward to never hearing the UK called England again. If this thread achieves nothing more than that I will be a happy man.

Back to the original question. Before I moved to Ireland I was originally heading to London and just stopping in Dublin on my way for a few weeks. Rents are extremely high but you can get a room in an apartment share as my friend who moved over did. It was a large 3 bed apt in Paddington that she shared with a couple and another girl. All had their own rooms and it was a large apt. You will noit get a place on your own for that price. There could be a cost of living adjustment if your company transferrs you. I tried to get work that way and it fell through so don't count on your company getting you a job unless you perform a service they need in the UK/Britian/England/London .

If you do it wrong it can eat up a lot of your cash and you will end up going back faster than you like. Plan everything including your finances.
