It was filmed around Howth! I love seeing the places around Dublin in the cinema. I live a few streets away from where they filmed My Left Foot and the back streets still look the same. Has anyone seen that new film a few months ago Cowboys and Angels? I ,missed it in the cinema and not sure if or where outside Ireland it was released.

Other ethnic characters are in "The Brothers McMullen" and "Only the Lonely."
Have enjoyed The MatchMaker, Ned Devine, and Commitments/Van/Snapper. Now what we need is for more of Maeve Binchy's books made into movies. And maybe a mini-series of Nora Roberts' "Born in Ice," "Born in Fire," "Born in Shame" -- love the character of Murphy. (Lifetime Network, anyone?)

If you want to expand the concept to include movies that portray part of the early Irish experience in America, then "The Gangs of New York" should be added to the list. While it certainly takes some liberties and doesn't represent the best of our people, it does show the squalid conditions that many endured.
A scene from the movie Gettysburg, showing the Irish Brigade receiving mass absolution, is fairly accurate. A portion of the really, really bad movie "Gods and Generals" also fairly accurately portrays the Irish Brigade attack at Fredericksburg being repulsed by an Irish regiment in the Confederate army.

this is a relatively new one - just released in Ireland last week, but I saw it and thought it was excellent - very entertaining!! It's called Man About Dog. There's also another film called Adam and Paul that's been out here a few weeks that's supposed to be very good - quite a gritty film.

Currently, they are filming "The Honeymooners" movie in Dublin, with a predominantly Black cast. Cedric the Entertainer as Ralph Kramden, Mike Epps as Ed Norton and Gabrielle Union as Alice Kramden. How weird is that?

Does anyone know why John Huston’s “The Dead,” a terrific film, is not on DVD? I wore out my videocassette of it, and I’ve been looking forward to the DVD for years, literally. There’s so much junk that goes from the theater straight to DVD. Why the wait on this lovely movie? Legal snafus?

CAL presents 1970s Ulster in an interesting manner. Although the two major actors perform well (John Lynch and Helen Mirren), their love affair is a little hard to believe. Lynch plays a 20 year old working class Catholic while Mirren plays a 35 year old upper middle class Protestant widow and mother.
The Quiet Man is the quintessential Irish movie although parts were filmed at the Republic studio in California (ie. the rain scene when John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara get soaked).

A couple that have not been mentioned yet (I think)
Rory McShane Was Here (I loved the part where they arrested him and the garda comes in to ask if he wants a cuppa!)
There was also one about two barbers (one Catholic, one Protestant) in Belfast that take over a toupee business. Can't remember the name! But it was funny!
IrishSean...boy you've got a comprehensive list. I'm going to print it out and see if I can get some of the movies I haven't seen yet.

maureencol, the one you're thinking of is 'Rory O'Shea was Here' - I really liked it and was about to mention it as well!
Intermission was...interesting - it stars Colin Farrell, among others.
Another recent one I haven't seen mentioned is 'The Boys from County Clare', for those trad music lovers.

The Quiet Man was the first film mentioned in the thread!!
Another more recent one is Pavee Lackeen - a documentary-style movie about a young traveller girl.
Inside I'm Dancing also got great reviews when it was released a few years ago.
