But we have rented the RV and cant do anything about that part now, nor that i want to do any thing about it..., I find the motorhomes the easiest way of travel when you have small kids like me (4 and 7) ,even in Europe..., otherwise I would agree with you 'annhig'
TO Zeppole: thanks for the links really helpful
to Starfish1: can you send me the name of the campground in Florence, in venice I already have

2yrs ago we did RV tour of pick up in Munich- neushweintein castel ( spelling?) - Lugano- Bellagio- then all the way down to - Nice- Monaco-then across Italy to Venice- upto Salzburg and back to Munich
again in 15 days and we had a great time, I dont say that I saw every little church or historic place of these cities... you have to study in advance and pick couple of site and restaurants that you want to see the most
I agree totaly that every italian city with the wealth of culture and gastronomy is over whelming experience, but I want to get a general feeling of these places and visit selected sites in each destination too.
but the more I get the feed back the more I think that we should shrink the rout further..Will let you know

THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACKS SO FAR

Go for it. You can always tweak your itinerary as you go along. I'm sure the campsites outside the cities will offer you transportation (for a fee) into the major cities.

I'm not worried that you'll get lost in Venice with your motor home.

Mamoori, here's the Florence info -
Campeggio Michelangelo
http://www.ecvacanze.it/en/elite_fam...g-michelangelo

A bit tricky to find but totally great once you're there. It does get booked up so probably worth booking ahead if you know when you'll be there. Otherwise, plan on getting there early in the day to secure a spot.

Enjoy your trip! It's a GREAT way to travel.

mamoori - I'm not suggesting that you jettison the RV, just don't move it around so much!

I also don't think you should drop the RV - most folks haven't suggested that.

But IMO spending so many hours confined in it, moving from place to place wouldn't be so much fun. Park it for a few days in 3 or 4 places and actually get to enjoy a gelato or a walk or a swim instead of having to pack up and move every night or two.

Mamoori, if you haven't seen it already, you also might want to check out the following website in terms of where to go and how much moving around you want to do. http://www.soultravelers3.com/
They are a family who have been on the road touring in a campervan for a few years now - a fun read and some great insight into some of the places they've been and the logistics involved in getting there.

mamoori,

With children that small, I suggest that when you shrink your route, you consider focusing on the lakes (especially Lago di Garda so near Verona) and on the areas with castles in Parma.

I wouldn't go any further south than Rome for reasons of heat at that time of year . Also, with children that small, you are likely to find much of the seaside of northern Italy is way too vertical, too many cliffs, rocks and stairs. Better to stick to the Tuscan coast for flat and sandy beaches, with many campsites the closer you get to the Pisa area.

Here's some information about visiting castles in the Parma area:

http://goeurope.about.com/od/parmait...tles_parma.htm

Parma is great flat town with lots of parks as well, plus lots of great cheese and other food.

You might consider a route that is Verona/Lago di Garda -- Venezia-- Florence -- scenic drive through Tuscany -- Rome -- return north via a Tuscan coast beach stop that incudes a visit to Pisa-- Parma area -- back to Milan.

left for piza on the 22nd stopped over only to see the leaning tower, and have a lunch,
23rd early afternoon arrived in Sorrento,
24th had a reservation for a private yatch, spent the day in Capri and Positano
25th pompeii in am and Napoli pm and dinner (very short visit….)
26th am going towards Rome
27th and 28th in Rome (camping in village Flaminio, Excellent site in the city, very recommended)
29th going towards Florenve through via Chiantigina visited many wineries (loved it) stayed at Greve de Chianti (lovely medieval village)

The last post from the OP was nearly five years ago. I doubt, Roger, that you will get an email.

Welcome to Fodors rogersla58.

You really do need to start a new thread of your own instead of posting to a 5 yo topic.. And normally -- private messages aren't the best way to get info on this site. By starting your own thread you will get input/suggestions/advice from more people . . . on the public forum.

I will be doing a 2 week camper trip in northern Italy from June 24 to July 3rd...
Plan to leave from Milan, visit the lakes, Dolomites, Veneto, then Cinqueterre and South to Siena and then comeback to Milan.
Have few questions that would LOVE to hear from all your readers:

1. I have already rented a 2 people campervan. Do I need to reserve in advance for campground or can I just arrive and find a spot to park and plug my camper for the night?

2. I will be boing to Palio in Siena, do I need to reserve in advance for campground near Siena, any suggestions?

3. I have read that campervans are NOT allowed in some towns or areas of cities... if you enter the zone you get expensive tickets. How do you know where you can and CANNOT enter? What are the typical restrictions in cities like Trieste, Verona, Milan or smaller towns?

4. What is the best option to park near cinqueterre? What campgrounds and logistics do you recommend?

5. Any suggested itineraries for northern italy for 2 weeks visiting lakes, Verona, Venice, Dolomites, Cinqueterre and Siena?
THanks in advance for your tips!
