We thought Provence was over-rated. But that comes from a personal preference--we don't like anyplace that's hot and dry (and crowded!) in summer and has a lot of scrubby trees. We like GREEN green, which is why we'd take an alpine meadow over a Provence field any summer.
We felt the same way about Taos, NM. My husband's parents had bought a very nice home there and as an artist, my MIL loved the light, the blue skies, etc. But we thought it was simply TOO brown, too dry, and overall just couldn't see the beauty of the place.

The coffee shops of Seattle (or rather the one Seattle coffee shop that's repeated several hundred times)
Actually, all of Seattle. One of many places that are probably delightful (indeed to avoid upsetting sensitive Washingtonian souls, maybe utterly perfect) to live in, but that offer a visitor really no "there" there.

While I wouldn't say it the same way as metullus, I agree with him. If I hate Vegas, why does that upset so many people?
When I give a "negative" opinion here I always feel compelled to point out, everyone is different. But shouldn't that be obvious?! Of course not everyone likes the same thing, but why does it bother some people to hear things negative about their travel places? It doesn't bother people (I hope) to hear someone say, "I hate liver", or "I hate it when the dog throws up in the LR right before I leave for work". (Sorry, that happened y-day).
A travel forum becomes totally useless if the only "proper" response is "Place X is wonderful".
And correct me if I'm wrong, but don't some of the same people who think it's so terrible to say something negative about a place feel it's totally appropriate to say something negative about someone here who, heaven forbid, asks a vague question? I think it's worse to be "negative" about a person (especially when you know they are hear reading your comments), than it is to be negative about a place.
P.S. I thought Mona is lovely.
