I don’t think of caves as being beautiful.

Maybe interesting but beautiful?

I like beautiful light. There are beaches with caves in Sardinia. They’re not too deep so you can go in them to get away from the sun but the opening is very wide so you can see the sand and water just outside while you’re in the shade.

Also seen caves with stalactite formations and multicolored lighting but have no interest in seeing more of them.

Lednice in the southern Czech Republic is relatively unknown outside of Czechs, Austrians and a few Germans. Really incredible grounds, very high caliber.

I guess it was too unknown to make the list.

Absolutely! Definetely worth a visit, though a bit hard to reach without a car.
Would not have even known it existed if I had not browsed through the Unesco World Heritage list just for fun.

I was in Lednice too. It's a nice palace and gardens. Absolutely worth a visit, easy daytrip from Brno, from Vienna or Bratislava, but there are at hundreds of similar chateaux all over Europe. Yes, it's on the World Heritage list, so it is one WH location from the 500 in Europe.

It's very easy to reach without a car. Hourly buses from Breclav take 20 minutes and Breclav is one of the most important railway hubs of Czechia. All trains between Prague and Vienna/Bratislava/Budapest stop there.

In the summer season there are even 4 train pairs(with historic rolling stock) on weekends between Breclav and Lednice. Just one change of train from Vienna, Brno, Prague, Budapest or even Berlin! That's not exactly hard to reach.

I think I've only heard of the Loften Islands.

But it seems they went out of their way to choose less-famous places, like some other lake than Lake Bled in Slovenia and some village in the Berner Oberland which isn't as well known as Murren, Wengen, etc.

Actually, I've been to the Loire and Picos de Europa, which they don't even have a picture of.

OK the intro. text refers to "remote corners" known only to "locals and intrepid travelers."

Fine but are they still the "most beautiful" in Europe?
Hoge Veluwe in the Netherlands? Really?

My vote would be for the Wadden Sea and the Frisian Islands.

<<Jutland ( I haven’t been) but it has been a European Sunday supplement “hidden secret” for ten years. >>

My parents, who weren't exactly world travelers to put it mildly, rented a thatched cottage in Jutland near Aarhus more than 25 years ago, so it's hard for me to believe it's one of those "little known gems." Even back then there were plenty of tourists around. Nice enough place, but hardly a secret.

All of these listicles are pretty useless, they mostly function as click bait. I admit to sometimes scrolling through them but it is seldom worth it. I think a list compiled by people on this forum would be a much better one.

Hi, I know Cowboy thought it might be hard to reach but that was never my implication. We did drive, but my cousins stopped there by train last year.

I was quite impressed by the grounds and greenhouse. You are probably more well traveled than I am.' I'm curious which chateaux had grounds that did impress you.

Still no Uber but there are taxis. English is not common in South Moravia--bring a printout of your hotel or take a business card once you arrive. You would need the restaurant or tour employee to call your taxi back.

When we checked how to get to Lednice by train from Vienna, we would have missed the connecting train in Breclav by 15 minutes or so. And would have had to wait some 1.5 hrs for the next one in Breclav. The connections from Brno could be smoother.
In addition, Lednice palace and gardens is just one bit of the Lednice-Valtice cultural region. It includes the lands in between Lednice and Valtice as well as Valtice palace. I assume that there is public transport between the two sites, but it was all too cumbersome for us to explore since we had a car anyway. And the drivetime from Vienna was just one hour.

Lithuania is the best!

We have been to Lithuania twice, 2012 and 2015. My husband has relations there and dinner with them is an amazing thing. We have done genealogy research, visited different areas including the Curonian Spit, Kaunas, Vilnius and Grutas Park, among others. I am in love with the Uzupis neighborhood in Vilnius and am seriously thinking about buying an apartment there. Food is great. Beer is great. Costs are very affordable. Parking is a hassle though. Always and no matter how urban or rural. I have a number of blog posts at www.ellenbcutler.com. Search term "lietuva" or "seima".
