Out of all the Cathar castles, this is probably the hardest to climb. But perhaps when I did it, I was a year older! Twelve months prior, I had climbed Peyrepertuse and Queribus, both on the same day.
The initial part of the track, after you park your car, is steep, then you track through a tree covered section to the wooden hut where you buy your ticket. The track is stone laid, very rugged; the shaded part can get very slippery, especially after overnight rain.
Further on, the track remains rugged and some of the leap between steps become quite high, giving your calves a good workout! Just make sure you have good hiking shoes.
But the view when you reach the chateau is amazing, especially over le Pays d'Olmes.
Enjoy!
