Montreux to Interlaken by train

My family and I will be traveling by train
from Montreux to Interlaken.
Which is the most scenic route:

Montreux - Gstaad - Interlaken
or
Montreux - Martigny - Brig - Interlaken

Thanks in advance

I vote for the route that takes you to Brig. I assume that from Brig you backtrack to Goppenstein and to through the tunnel to Kandersteg on the north side of the Berner Oberland chain.
From Kandersteg you go to Spiez and then on to Interlaken - West and Ost.
However, I don't think the train route is as scenic as the highway route.

Via Martigny for sure.

While it may look more scenic than my home town, though, it is not very scenic in the relative sense.

Any of the three ways you go are, for the most part, boring. While you may enjoy a bit of mountain scenery when you get to the mountains south of Interlaken you'll be quite surprised, I think, by how ordinary the sights along the way from Montreux were.

And I do hope you won't be staying in Intelaken, but in the mountain interior.

Ed

I cannot believe that Ed finds the ride from Montreux to Brig boring.
However having said that my choice would definitely be the Montreux-Gstaad-Interlaken route. Both routes are scenically good, but the Gstaad route is far more interesting, with a lot more variety, and a lot more chances to see rural Switzerland close up, and at slower speeds.
Catch the 0900 "Crystal Panoramic Express" from Montreux, changing at Zweissimmen onto the "Golden Pass Express" for Interlaken.
The first half hour of the trip alone is well worth the fare,as the train vitually climbs vertically up the mountain, opening up view after view of Montreux, Lake Geneva, and the French Alps.
These trains are covered by Eurail, but you will need to reserve a seat the day before or on the day.

Tony, I said
"... for the most part, boring",
and I stand by that. Ditto for the trip from Montreux over Zweisimmen.

There are certainly attractive portions. But then think in terms of comparison.

If you've lived your whole life in Hays Kansas and have never seen a hill, and never visited a mountain before getting off the airplane in Geneva, the trip from Montreux to Interlaken over either the MOB or the Martigny route will look, for the most part, stunning. Even then, some of it will be pretty pedestrian.

If, on the other hand, one spends a couple of weeks amongst any of the Swiss Alps and then takes the train from Interlaken to Montreux, it's all going to look quite ordinary.

All I can say is, hope for good weather so the baby-sized peaks aren't obscured and take along a good book to read during the less-than-spectacular portions.

The good thing is that the mountains of the Oberland will look even more spectacular after crawling along the lesser sights of the Montreux Interlaken trip.
Ed
