Montmartre - please ease my mind

Hi all,

I apparently have spent too much time on travel forums again and am second guessing my travel plans.

I will be in Paris in April and am staying in Montmartre near the Sacré-Coeur with my young daughter. I chose this area since it is off the beaten path to some degree and the place we are staying is highly recommended. Every time I read about the area though it makes me nervous. I guess what I really need to know is if the dangers some people talk about are real or perceived.

So for those of you that have stayed there/lived there please either reassure me my instincts were right and we will enjoy the area or send me packing to a new locale.

I would avoid getting close to Place Pigalle or Blvd. Clichy. Your daughter might wonder why the ladies are grabbing you by your arm to go into one of the "shows."

I have a friend who stayed in Montmartre last year and really enjoyed it. No mention of any problems whatsoever.

Some people have a lot of imagination concerning the "dangers" of Montmartre. Just relax.

I think most people don't want to stay there for a short visit just because it is more inconvenient and it will take more time on the metro to get places, rather than danger. I think most of the dangers would be for men hanging around late at night on the streets and in bars (not near Sacre Coeur, in particular, though), especially if they think that woman is really fascinated by you and you buy her a lot of drinks.

BTW, I am on bd Clichy now and again, there are actually some places I like around there, and a convenient bus line(s) at least from place Clichy, I don't see any reason to avoid it totally, although I presume you aren't going to roam around late at night. Of course when I stay in that area, it's over towards the west near place Clichy (I stay down below it in the 9th), not around Sacre Coeur.

I am a single female and stayed there while I was in Paris. The only issue I had was right in front of Moulan Rouge. I would not suggest going there at night. Other than than, I did not have any issues in the area. You just need to be alert and cautious.

The metro stop for my hotel was actually Place de Clichy. I did not venture to Pigalle. I would not roam that area at night with your daughter.
