There have been many, many threads on this subject. You might want to try doing a search. But the general consensus is that it's better to get Euro at an ATM once you get to Shannon (or Dublin). You'll get the best excange rate that way.

Read this article: http://tinyurl.com/k3vy6. Note what you need to do BEFORE leaving home to make sure your credit card and ATM card will work in Europe.

No! You'll find that there are ATM's in the airports both Shannon & Dublin. Just be sure you have a 4-digit PIN # and an ATM Card with Visa or Plus or Cirrus on it.

BTW
Cash is best! I always use ATM's and pay cash for everything. That way one avoids Credit card fees for Foreign Currency conversion (as much as 4.5%) and Dynamic Currency Conversion Scams.

Actually, if you're an idiot like me and accidently leave your ATM at home, you will be thankful you purchased E200 before you came. However, if you are a normal person, you can get cash from the ATM. If that ATM is broken or out of cash, there are many others.

Generally speaking, you'll get a better rate if you wait until you get to Ireland to exchange money. So take $200-300 with you, keep it in a secure place (like a money belt or neck pouch), but exchange it only in an emergency. Plan to come home with all of it. Take home some euros you've gotten at an ATM, too. Looking at them from time to time is certain to get you dreaming about returning to Europe!
