Looking to do an personal excursion from Athens to Monemvasia. Can anyone gauge in how many days can one see the major sites and get the flavor of the town?

There's scarcely enough to fill a morning in Monemvasia.

If you want a base for touring the Mani, or for anywhere else in the Peloponnese, you need to have a rough idea of what you want to visit. There's next to nothing most people would put on any "must see" list: but people like Patrick Leigh Fermor have spent half an exceptionally long life pottering round the area. There's the usual scattering of archaeological sites, and crumbling towers, that mean nothing to most of us but that for an expert who's brought enough of the learned articles with him can provide months of entertainment.

Presumably you've decided to go to Monemvasia for some reason: only you can work out how long it'll take you to do whatever it is.

I found no malmsey retailers: not even in Athens airport duty-free. There's a joke somewhere there about "No Ifs, No Butts", but it's a bit early in the day...

Do agree that Monemvasia is interesting but not a great deal to see. I love Peloponnese - nearby Mystras and further afield Methoni & Dirou caves and closer to Athens, Epidaurus & Corinth.

When are you going to be there?
I was in December last year there, and spent 5 nights over Christmas and i really loved it.
Generally i think 2 night would be enough to relax in Monemvasia and enjoy the old city.
If you have a car you can visit nearby villages, and in the summer Elafonisi with it's amazing beach is not far away

At least one full day (2 nights) is needed if you intend climbing the rock as well as looking around the town, I would only agree with the above statement if you don't intend doing much more than walking through the main part of town & a quick wander down some of the side alleyways.
As Clausar syas, when are you coming? Climbing the rock to Agia Sophia is tough in the hottest months & going to the very top will take you quite a while, but it is worth it!
Take water, wear a hat (no respite from the sun at the top) & good walking shoes/sandals, the grip is most important.

I meant to add that it is very different at night too, so well worth staying over

and the entire region has a lot to see, the villages with the tower houses are beautiful, so is Gythio and the Dirou Caves, not to forget the mountain villages of the Taygetos.... or the nice beaches of Elafonisos, or in Gythio....

Mystras and the Messinian Mani are just around the corner too...

Saying that there isn't anything to see, is simply not true...

A few years ago during summer, I arrived inside Monevasia about 3-4 pm , stayed 1 night, and had to check out by 11 am the next day.

Felt that wasn't nearly enough, and didn't get a chance to climb to Agia Sophia on top of the rock.

Under these circumstances, a 2nd night would have been nice. Had I been able to arrive in the morning of the 1st day, 1 night would have been OK.

Don't know why 'flanneruk', above, is so negative -- Monemvasia was a highlight of my few days in the Mani region.
