topping for Michael...

and it occurs to me to clarify - - don't think of day tripping to Monaco from Milan.

Consider it a 24 hr stop, en route from Milan onward to other destinations in France.
No no no. I've tried Monaco twice and hated it both times: boring, no charm.
Try the perched village of Eze nearby if you have a car. And the cinque terre on the italian riviera can't be beat ; by train get off in Levanto, by car drive and park in Levanto, and take local trains to the cinque terre towns. If you are driving a gem of a small town on the Italian coast is Noli: small narrow streets, nice beach, nice church;:good for a few hours or a rest. But Monaco, never never; I'd prefer the old town section of Nice.

I spent 3 days in Monaco, big mistake. No desire to go back. If you want to sit around and watch luxury cars park at the Casino, give it a try. I would go to the Italian Lakes.

I spent a day in Monaco and loved it! Beautiful town, rich in history and just rich! haha! I really enjoyed wandering around on the hill, looking through the amazing gardens, I hear the aquarium is very good- started by Cousteau? I wouldn't do it as a day trip, we left Monaco and headed to Milan by train and I think it was a 5 hour trip?? But if you are going to spend the night then I definataly think it's worth it!

Michael-do plan on a day in Monaco if only to visit the Monaco Aquarium and have lunch on the roof overlooking the harbor!(We had based ourselves in Nice and did daytrips out of there.) We took the bus one day over to Monaco and had a delightful day. We spent the morning at the aquarium(which is several levels built into the side of the hill). It is fascinating as it has everything from actual specimens to the history of oceanography, etc. Prince Ranier's grandfather and father spent big dollars getting interesting specimens to bring back to this aquarium. Jacques Cousteau was also instrumental in this aquarium as he used to have one of his permanent labs right below the aquarium. We went upstairs to the roof area where they had a sit own restaurant and deli type place and throughly enjoyed our lunch with the view of the harbor and the yachts. After lunch,we walked over to the palace and walked around the garden area, etc. We even saw the young prince arriving to the palace.
I think that those of us who spent our younger years watching all those great movies that were filmed in Monaco will enjoy just a quick visit to see the harbor, the corniches, etc. Go and have a glass of wine on the top of the aquarium rooftop so you can "pretend" that one of those yachts below is yours!
