Mais oui, but at least one is always PLANNING to go. It helps to not lose the focus.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for the movie scoop. I saw the Modigliani exhibit in NYC also - it was great. I meant to get back a second time but never made it.

I've been a Modigliani fan for over 20 years and have lots of framed postcards and prints that I keep switching around my home. I bought a painted light switch at the museum to add to my collection.

Over the years I've run into a couple of exhibits of his works in Europe - once in Paris and once in Bruge (an exhibit of drawings). I bought catalogues from both European exhibits.

It's great to find other Modigliani fans and I can't wait for the movie and I love Andy Garcia!! And yes, Modigliani was very handsome. I'll have to look for his studio on my next Paris trip.

Adrienne

Hi Adrienne!

I never knew you were such a big Modigliani fan!! Your home sounds lovely with all the prints/postcards scattered about; I'd feel very comfortable there, just meandering about looking at everything. And the light switch! Did you get it at one of the museums in Paris or from the NYC exhibit?

With everyone talking about this exhibit it must be wonderful.

Hopefully, we'll each get to see this movie and we can all report back our thoughts on it.

Hi Mary,

I got the light switch at the NYC exhibit this summer. I believe the exhibit ended last month. At least it was scheduled to do so. That was my first time at the Jewish Museum. The building, itself, is beautiful with great architectural details.

Thank you, Adrienne! I will try to go there when I get to NYC.

I know, Coccinelle ~ did you see him in the Garcia Lorca film? Wonderful!

From 1997, The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0117106/

I was intrigued because I remembered Lorca being mentioned in an Allen Ginsberg poem "Supermarket in California" from his Howl collection:
"and you,
Garcia Lorca, what were you doing down by the
watermelons?
I saw you, Walt Whitman, childless, lonely old
grubber, poking among the meats in the refrigerator
and eyeing the grocery boys.
I heard you asking questions of each: Who killed
the pork chops? What price bananas? Are you my
Angel?"

Before the current exhibit, the Kimbell in Fort Worth, Albright-Knox in Buffalo and the Los Angeles hosted "Modigliani and the Artists of Montparnasse". We attended the Kimbell in May, 2003.

The Albright-Knox has an excellent website for those interested.

Jsmith, thank you for the great website!!

It's always so gratifying to see other art lovers out there. God knows, I couldn't even MENTION Modigliani at work ("who?&quot.

Beatchick, if you want a real treat next time you're in Paris go to 49 rue du Montparnasse. It is called idem anciens Ets Mourlot and is the site of the lithographer Fernand Mourlot who published many lithographs and posters for shows by Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Dufy, Matisse, Miro, Leger.

The intersection of Blvd Edgar Quinet and rue du Depart is named for him.

They are still operating and when we were in Paris in Nov. 2002, we met the manager, Patrice Forest, while they were printing a lithograph by Andre Brasilier. We also purchased a newly printed litho (40/100) by Nicolas Vial from his book "Un Rhino c'est Rosse".

We'll visit again this November and I hope they have something I can afford.

Wow! Thank you, jsmith, you're the best!! I love Chagall, Braque, Matisse & Miro. The Cincinnati Art Museum has this HUGE wall-sized Mirò mural that I just love. It resembles a turquoise sea with funny, odd-looking creatures floating about. It used to be inside the historic Plaza Hotel that was downtown. Très cool!

Thanks for mentioning this- must've missed it in reports of the toronto Film Fest. I am excited about the movie too- esp. since I missed the Modigliani exhibit in NYC because I was in Paris. (I also missed Whistler's pieces which were on tour in DC!) So, as the old Modigliani joke goes, you can ask me, "Why the long face?"

What a terrific thread. Interesting that so many of us admire Modigliani. I think the first thing I saw done by him was a sort of wiry sculpture at MOMA in NYC. I think it was an Afghan Hound and, at the time, we were showing Afghan Hounds and it made quite an impression on me.

We were in Honolulu in July and went to the Art Institute there. Much to my surprise was a lovely nude by Modigliani.

Have never had the privilege of attending an exhibit, but hope springs eternal! Perhaps I will be at the right place at the right time someday.

Interesting that movies based on artist's lives seem to be in vogue again. I very much enjoyed the fairly recent Frida Kahlo movie, and years ago the VanGogh movie with Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn as Gauguin.

Thanks to all of you for the websites and interesting information about this wonderful artist!

That's one of many reviews. If anyone is old enough to remember the Fabulous Gerard Philipe(he was my favorite actor), rent the video (if you can find it) where he plays Amedo Modigliani and Anouk Aimee plays Jean,
It played in 1958 or 59 and was called Les Amants de Montparnesse and also Montparnasse 19
