Modigliani starring Andy Garcia - U.S. release date: Dec. 15th

I LOVE Modigliani so I'm excitd to read that they've done a movie about him starring Andy Garcia in the titled role. You can read about it here:
http://imdb.com/title/tt0367188/

According to Bauer Martinez Studios "Modigliani will be released in US Theaters on December 15th, 2004 for Academey Award Consideration."

Faboo!!

ciao,
Beatchick

I look forward to seeing it. He had quite an interesting life. I really enjoyed the exhibit of his work at the Jewish Museum in NY last spring.

I wish I could have seen that exhibit, Marilyn. We have but a few scant works of his here at the Cincinnati Art Museum. And yes, his life was very interesting (and volatile). It says on imdb.com that he had a huge rivalry with Picasso which I didn't know about.

My last trip to Paris (oh so long ago ~ April 2003) I visited the site of one of his studios in Montmartre (7 place Jean-Baptiste-Clément) and also located where Jeanne Hebuterne killed herself by jumping from the top floor of the building shortly after Modigliani's death (8-bis r. Amyot in the 5th arrondissement - Latin Quarter).

Apparently, the film did well at the Toronto Film Festival last week which is why it was finally given a release date in the U.S. for December 15th. I wonder if they thought most Americans wouldn't know/appreciate Modigliani and wouldn't attend the movie? Sometimes when I mention him here in Cincinnati I get a blank stare and I qualify my comment with "you know, he did the ladies with the oval faces and elongated necks??).

Thanks for sharing--talk about great casting! We saw a terrific Modigliani exhibit at the Musée du Luxembourg in 2002.

The exhibit Elaine referenced, Modigliani-Beyond the Myth, will travel to AGO in Toronto and then to the Phillips Collection in D.C. so maybe you could catch it at one of these venues? I could kick myself for missing it when it as in NYC.

I was also lucky enough to see this exhition in NYC this year! It is a wonderful overview of his work, and those fantastic reclining nudes are just one aspect!

I am so interested to read that beatchick visited one of his studios.
When I was in Paris in spring of 2000, I stayed with a friend in her place on a small street in Montparnasse. I slept in the room facing the street, and would occasionally look out the window to find small groups of tourists stopping in front of the building, which was small, and very old. The doors were creaky, and the steps up to her tiny apartment were so worn they had depressions in the middle.

She told me that the reason for the tourists was because Gauguin had briefly lived in the building, and Modigliani had worked in a studio that we could see just across the interior courtyard.
After I found this out, I would just get goosebumps each time I came home after sighseeing and climbed those worn stairs! It's a find memory of mine!

Yes, Mimi, he was very handsome; hard to believe but I find him more handsome than Andy Garcia. I found this picture of Modigliani on the net. I'm certain the photo to the left is him:

And here's the official website for the movie:

Here's the website for the studio:

Thanks, Maureen!! Unfortunately, DC is too far of a drive for me otherwise I'd be visiting StCirq all the time!! Besides the Cincinnati Art Museum, I've also seen some works at the Chicago Art Institute (why, it's just a scant 5-hour drive away!).

Hi, Sognatrice! I was JUST thinking of your name last night, how pretty it is. What is it's meaning? It reminds me of singing so I associate your name with CigaleChanta, our singing cicada! Well, I only was able to see the outside of the building where the studio was housed, on the northside of the triangular place Jean-Baptiste-Clement, but even that was very cool to me. What street was it that you stayed?

hi beatchick- my name is just one I made from the Italian verb for "to dream" using the feminine ending "trice" (pronounced tree-chay) so to me , it means dreamer. I wanted an italian name, because I have been studying the language all this time.

I am looking up the street in my old journals, post the name as soon as I find it!

the street is rue de la grande chaumiere. It's just a couple of blocks from La Coupole, and near the Vavin Metro stop..

I see, Sognatrice! How very clever of you, I like it!!

I thought maybe you were talking about the Bateau Lavoire on Place Emile Goudeau? I know Max Jacob & Apollinaire had studios there as well and I'm thinking Modi might have had one there as well, especially since he & Max Jacob were good friends. But the Modigliani websites states he had studios all OVER Paris!!

Scarlett: AWESOME!! I can't wait!!

Sognatrice, DUH! All this time you've been talking about MontPARNASSE and I thought you were talking about MontMARTRE!! Yes, I think that is on my list of "Things to eventually see in Paris". I just haven't made it to Montparnasse yet. Eventually, I am taking the kids to Paris and we plan to stay in Montparnasse at the Hotel de Blois. Yes, that street is near rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs where Hemingway stayed! Cool.

beatchick-There are alot of interesting tidbits in the nooks and crannies of that neighborhood, known to locals, and some great hidden restaurants, so I hope you and your family get to spend some time exploring it one day.

I'm signing off of this thread now, it's kind of crowded here. Best luck to you, beatchick and thanks for the Modigliani film alert.

M...is that Paris trip still in the planning stages? We were tossing around the idea of renting an apt next time in Paris..I see myself on the Ille St-Louis with a loaf of bread, nonchalantly strolling to my flat
Would work with kidlets too ~ Just a thought ~

It is in the planning, Scarlett, but not in the works?? It will be a while, methinks. We've looked at apartments but that little hotel is only 70€ per night for a triple so that would be a tremendous savings for us.

Ahhh, but you know how I feel about the Île St-Louis! I'd love to live there and I would definitely love to stay there with the kidlets. When you go will you be having tea & chocolate at la Charlotte de l'Île Chocolaterie?? I have never forgotten your mention of the place & how you thought it so cute & charming! I'd love to have them make me a hat at La Grain de Sable (just once!) located at 79 rue Saint-Louis-en-l'Île, just a little down from the chocolaterie.

I think I read about it in "Romantic Paris" by Thirza Vallois.

Did you tell C I said "HI"?

" loaf of bread, nonchalantly strolling to my flat"
That sounds DEE-VINE! When do you think you might get to go back?
