Mobility options in Tuscany

Hi All! Our family of ‘Silver Citizens’ is traveling to Tuscany next spring and are beginning to put together some of the logistics. There will be 8 of us. The one destination we’ve already got is a fabulous place in Greve, about midway between Florence and Sienna. At least one person in our group has some mobility challenges and will be using a collapsible, electric scooter. We’re confident that the lodging we have in Greve will accommodate it and we’re wondering if folks have suggestions of other places in Tuscany (and central Italy in general) that might be ‘scooter friendly’.

Thanks in advance. We’ve done a lot of trip planning and sharing on Fodors in the past and have always found Fodorites to be helpful and resourceful. It’s good to be back!

Pienza is flat probably the flatest city around.

Florence is flat but the cobbles and the narrow pavements in certain areas will be a drag so try to stay north of the river.

Pisa is flat

Was it your intention to explore Tusany in depth or stay within a fairly small geographic area and make day trips? How many days do you have and how is your group going to travel around?

You're going to need two large cars, two drivers, etc. If you don't have experience driving in Italy, you need to learn about ZTLs.

Worth having a think about the type of vehicles you want, vans can be good but often you have to climb up into them, while sedans (or whatever you call them) can be too low, while SUVs vary. Hotels may have lifts but sometimes in small hotels you access them from stairs. Showers and baths... need some thought.

Once you have identified a few hotels, I'd drop an email to them (English will be fine) just explaining any limits and checking they can sort it.
