Hello!

We're planning a day trip to Mljet from Dubrovnik and I'm wondering what else we should do besides seeing the national park and lakes? Is there a great spot for lunch? Another question - How do you get around without a car?

hi dixieland... we just got back yesterday.. Quick report on Mljet (pronounced Myet).. from Pile Gate, bus 1A to Jardrolinija Port 10k/pp per direction - go about 5 stops -then Ferry leaves at 10:00 - i believe that is the same every day.. sharp! its about a 1hour ride -22k/pp each direction. comfortable and pretty views.. When we arrived, we realized that everyone either had rides arranged, or, i guess, there were some vans.. We didn't know what the story with them was, so we just started walking up the hill. It was very apparant that without a car or ride, you couldn't really go anywhere.. but right up the road about 50-100yds(?) there was a Mini BRUM car rental where we rented a tiny convertible Fiat (ours was Zebra striped with Leopard print seat covers - it was the cutest thing!). Cost 260kuna for 5 hours... btw, the Ferry goes back to Dubrovnik at 4pm SHARP. We drove around the island just checking out the beauty... great photo opps! We found an area in Polace to park and walk around.. nice boats were docking and eating at the resterants.. so we thought we would eat there. Had a really nice lunch - Ogigje (i think thats the name of it). My son had Red Snapper with fries which he enjoyed, and i had salad (not exciting) 170k. (no wine since we were driving).. then back to the Ferry... really really beautiful and one of the highlights of our trip, tho we didnt 'do' much there. I have the # for MiniBRUM if you would like it.. also a fax #. ... enjoy!

Thank you for all the information Callalilli! I was just thinking that maybe we shouldn't go to Mljet, since know one was responding to my post. Not a lot of people talk about Mljet either, so I'm glad you responded! I would like the number for the Mini Brum. I have a couple of questions. Could you pay for the bus ride to the ferry port and the ferry to Mljet in Kuna or euros? Did they specify you had to pay in Kuna? I'm trying to gauge how much money in kuna and euro we should get when we get to Croatia.

callalilli, i too, thank you for the mljet info. (ignore my question re:mljet on your other posting). does the ferry leave from the old port near ploce gate? if not, is it a taxi or a walk from ploce gate? i,too, w/b interested in minibrum tel #. do they have e-mail? great reports! we are leaving monday and are very exited! jack

dixieland.. when you go to the ATMs in Croatia.. they only give you Kuna.. we paid for absolutely everything in Kuna. I do know that most places will accept Euro, but we didn't have any.. and Kuna worked just fine.
bodhijack.. i'm not sure about Ploce Gate departure.. we were staying at Pile Gate so began any excursion from there...Ploce Gate to Pile Gate is about a 10min walk through the city. the A1 bus took us to the Ferry.. You could check with Atlas Travel. they were very helpful to us on a few different requests.. (we also did a half day kayaking.. it was SO fun.. ) ok.. BRUM - +385 20 745 260 or +385 20 745 084. I'm not sure how to make phone calls so dont know what all the numbers are for.. and dont know which is tele or fax. and i don't see an email address..
To find Atlas Travel (this is not easy if you don't know where to look).. walk outside Pile Gate, walk to the left about ?50feet? and after a big open area, there is a stairway on the left that looks like it goes into an alley.. go down there and you will see Atlas on the left.

I took atlas tour to Mljet last September and had a great time, if I ever make it back there I will plan to maybe stay overnight. Not sure if there is anything to do but it was one of the best swims I had ever had, soft silky water, a lovely swim while looking back at the monastary. I great contrast to hectic Dubrovnik. We bought olive oil from stands at the ferry, had ice cream.
