Millenium Gloucester Hotel in South Kensington, London

Any feedback on the Millenium Gloucester Hotel in London? The advertisement says that it is across the street from the Gloucester Road tube stop. I don't know much about the South Kensington area, but this location seems to be very close to Earls Court, which seems a bit far out from central London to me. Your advice on this hotel would be appreciated. Thanks...

We stayed at the M. Gloucester in August 1998. It is exactly right across the street from the Gloucester tube stop. The location is good because everything is convenient to the tube. There are pubs, restaurants, shops, all within walking distance. (Harrod's is not far at all!) The Big Bus tour stop is right across the street. It is a BIG, business type hotel. We upgraded to club rooms and our room had a king bed, sitting area, marble bathroom, air conditioning, minibar, hair dryer, iron and ironing board. It is like any big hotel in any city ---- nothing to distinguish it from any other big hotel. But it is comfortable, by American standards. We stayed a block away at Harrington Hall in June 2000, and we found that to be a nicer hotel --- smaller, with more personal service, but all the same ammenities. I would recommend that over the Gloucester, if you could get it for less.

Hi Carol,
As a Londoner I can tell you you have chosen a great position. Anywhere in central london is pretty much within walking distance (if you like to walk). Otherwise the tube (train) will take you to your destination within a matter of minutes. Also the bus system is brilliant. I don't know the hotel but I know the area and you really won't have a problem. There is nothing in Earls Court that you need but Glouster Road is on the 'district & cirlce' tube line which takes you to all the most important tourist sites in London.
Go for it!
If you need any other advice please write to my email address.
Regards,
Janie.

I don't really understand that location because I stayed in a Millennium hotel that was right across from the Gloucester tube stop, but it was Bailey's, not M. Gloucester, which is on Harrington Gardens and a block or two away. I notice their web site claims they take up a whole block between H. Gardens and the tube, so I'm wondering if you can walk between the hotels or what. It is true there was some hotel or building beside Bailey's to the west (past the Indian restaurant) where I never went, so maybe that is one side of a huge complex that extends for a block or something. Well, if so, I think Bailey's (which really is across from the tube stop) is maybe smaller and more personal than the Gloucester from what I've heard and you might consider it. It was very nice, but it's fairly large also. The location is pretty convenient with the tube there, restaurants and shops. It isn't that near Earl's Court. It might be far out from the center for some folks who want a hotel right near Covent Garden or Trafalgar Sq.

Millenium Gloucester Hotel is in an excellent location for the tube from Heathrow. It is across the street from the Foram (Intercontinental chain). Baily's is on another side street nearbyWe like the area and it is easy to use the tube or to walk to Kensington park, Albert Hall.

We just came back after spending a week at the Millenium Bailey's.The Bailey's is at the corner of Gloucester and Courtfield and is directly across the street from the Gloucester Road tube(subway) stop. The Millenium Gloucester is adjoining the Bailey's and although has Harrington Gardens as it's address is directly next door.Being half-way down the block, the Gloucester is diagonaly across from the tube stop. The Bailey's is an older property, nice but used, like your favorite shoes.Lots of rambling hallways, toilets that don't aways work on the first flush(due to old plumbing according to the front desk),polished wood and brass and oil paintings of dead Englishmen.I can't say what the rooms are like at the Gloucester but the lobby was very large and modern and the feeling was that of a true 4 star hotel. We ended up staying at the Bailey's,when we found out that the Gloucester would cost 59 pounds more a night. As far as the area goes, being right across from the tube stop is great. Also there is a Waitrose grocery store 200 feet away,as nice as anything we have in this country. Also across the street there were two small grocery stores, one that was open all night.
Two blocks down Cromwell is a laundrymat, post office was on the next corner. As you can see, very convenient.London has to be the easiest city to get around. With nine tube lines crossing the city it is very easy to hop on and off.I had read that the rule of thumb is 3 minutes per stop so if your destination is 5 stops away figure 15 minutes. This might even be a little on the long side. You won't believe how easy it is to get around. Get a visitors travel card before you go.No picture required, good for tube, buses, everything,no waiting in line to buy tickets.Hope this wasn't too long and that it helps.

Thanks so much John. We are staying at the Bailey's in two weeks and your post was very helpful. We got such a great rate that we were a bit worried about the rooms and location, but I am now very confident we made the right decision. THANKS

well that explains why their site says they are across from the tube -- I wasn't even aware that hotel was down the street. In any case, I wanted to say that I stayed at Baileys and wouldn't have characterized it the way John has, which (to me) makes it sound kind of run-down and shabby. I didn't think it anything of the sort, my room was very nice and I had no plumbing problems. There are some long corridors, of course, as it's a fairly large hotel, but the Gloucester must be even bigger, isn't it? The service seemed very personal to me, and I liked the bar.

oh, regarding rates -- I got a rate of 99 GBP for a double (queen bed) at Bailey's in August, but also one free night out of 6, so that effectively made the rate about 83 GBP per night. That was before taxes, which add on quite a bit, as I recall (maybe 15-20 pct?). I thought that was an excellent rate for a 4-star in London. I got it through www.londontown.com
