My wife and I have a long weekend in Milan. Any suggestions for must-see buildings/art, shopping markets, good but inexpensive restaurants. thanks Stuart

I suggest you go go through the &quot;must sees&quot; in one day, so that you have more time to see the most interesting places ^_^. I'll not talk about the obvious Duomo, Piaza Scala (the theatre can't be visited because it's undergoing some repairs) and Galleria. A few original suggestions would include the University building (Ca' Granda, or Universit&agrave; Statale) close to the Duomo: its ancient part is realy gorgeous. The nearby church of San Nazzaro Maggiore, one of the oldest of Milano. The Guastalla garden, the finest garden of Milano, Sant'Ambrogio CHurch, the former catherdal of Milano and yet another very old church. The castle and its several museums (free admittance). Santa maria delle Grazie and the Cenacolo. Amongst the museums, the most famous are Pinacoteca di Brera and Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, but my favorite museum is Poldi Pezzoli. At the abovementioned castle's museums you can also find some real masterpieces of Italian art. While walking around the center of the city, take a glance at Piazza Belgioioso, at the Omenonni (big man) house (you'll understand the reason of the name as you pass by it) and Piazza Meda, all not far from the Duomo. Corso Magenta, Corso Como and Gorso Garibaldi are all very good shopping areas, and a cheaper (but not by far) alternative to Via Montenapolone. you can also find a good deal of outlets and stockhouses (a list is available at http://www.milanoin.it/shopping/spec...cci/spacci.asp). Also pay a visit to Coin and Upim stores.<BR>My favorite restaurants are all off the center. You can find good pizza (try pizza fritta!) at Frienno magnanno in via Benedetto Marcello (subway line 1, Loreto). For a good milanese dinner, try La betola dipiero in via Orti (0255184947). Have a taste of the alps at Mandi, in via De Marchi (026704295). Another favorite of mine is &quot;Osteria del riccio&quot;, actually in Sesto San Giovanni (subway line 1, Sesto Marelli or take a taxi) in via Del Riccio (0226220328). For homemade beer, try out Birrificio di Lambrate, via Adelchi, 5 (0270638678). For a real milanese aperitivo, my favorite place is Blender's bar in PIazzale Susa (you can find me thre almost every Wednesday!): great cocktails and good food to eat along with it. One cocktails and as much food as you can eat costs 4,00-4,50 euro.

Stayed at both Hotel Lloyd (3 star) and Hotel Speronari (1 star that feels like a 3) in my trips to Milan. Liked both of them, Speronari having a great location.<BR><BR>Definitely see the Ambrosiana gallery, was just there yesterday and was rather impressed by both the collection and the architecture of the building. Rather pretty.
