Milan info needed. :)

We are going to be in Venice and think it is worth the day trip to see "The Last Supper" in Milan.

1) We are thinking of using our Sunday for that. Is everything in Milan closed Sundays? Should we pick Friday or Thursday instead?

2) Should I be bookin to Milano Centrale?

3) If we only have 4 hours besides our viewing time, suggestions on what to squeeze in. We like art and beautiful churches/fountains, etc. Also, DD loves shopping/fashion.

4) We will need a place for a quick lunch once we get off the train. Suggestions?

Thanks!

1. Have you checked to see if tickets are available for the Last Supper for the dates you are considering?
Only 20-25 people can see the work at one time, for a maximum of 15 minutes. Only if people don't show up will you be able to stand in line and hope to get a ticket. Tickets can be booked two months in advance but sell out quickly. Visitors must be dressed in appropriate attire for entering a church in Italy (much stricter than in the USA... no bare knees or bare shoulders in general)

Last Supper tickets can be ordered online. there are a number of sites. The entry time is from Tuesday to Sunday from 8:15 to 19:00 (last admission 18.45) Closed Mondays and holidays: January 1, May 1, 25 December.

if you have to pick up your ticket from the ticket booth allow for 20 minutes before the time of your entrance.

2 You can find train information at www.italiarail.com
You will be booking in Centrale in Milan
Depending on the train its 2.5 or 3.5 hours.. the eurostar goes between these cities.

3. look at this trip report on fodors for museums and churches in Milan look in the italy forum:

4. in order to see the Last Supper and a bit of Milan you will essentially be giving up an entire day in Venice.

Last Supper is definitely worth it. Also, wander around the Duomo and downtown.

Off topic for Sarge56 -- FYI, visit this link to get info on an Austin GTG the end of August. Would've contacted you through e-mail, but I lost it.

Definitely visit the Duomo. You can also go up on the roof for nice views. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is pretty close so you could wander over there for your shopper daughter.

You can walk through the Galleria, but the shops may not be open.

Many shops on the main/fashion district street will be closed (or they were when we were there on a Sunday) but some, like the Ferrari store will be open. The Duomo is well worth the time to visit but be aware that there will be masses held on Sundays so your opportunity to visit may be limited. LaScala is fun to walk thru, the costume exhibit is very nice. The key will be getting tickets to the Last Supper. Being that you are planning to go on a Sunday, the likelihood of it being closed due to a strike of some sort is low. It is spectacular and well worth the investment of your time in my opinion.

I have secured the tickets, so no worries there. We will most certainly see the Duomo.

Has anyone toured LaScala? The private tour of the theater? Or the museum? Did you feel it was worth it? Do you remember the cost for the private theater tour?

Thanks!

We didn't do a tour, but we visited the museum and really enjoyed it. The museum entry ticket allowed us a peak at the interior of the theater from one of the private boxes.

There is a lovely museum near the Duomo called the Ambrosiana. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is gorgeous architecture and small and intimate; a perfect bite.
