Metro Stops

Sissy:

The only time we found ourselves feeling a bit "iffy" was at a stop near the Musee de Orsay (sp?). It's been a couple of years, but there wasn't a soul in there, other than us and a few sleeping homeless people, and it was kind of eerie. This was after midnight, though.

Otherwise, I felt perfectly safe in any metro area. As Victor said, get acquainted with the various routes during the daylight hours.

Another tip: buy a carnet of tickets so you always have some on you. We arrived back from London late one night at Gare du Nord and had a problem finding a ticket booth open during that time. I have been told you can buy tickets from vending machines, but we didn't have what was needed for one at that time, for some reason.

Enjoy your trip! It's a fabulous city.

Thought it frightens me somewhat, I must agree with Uncle Sam. The Abesses (Sp?) at Montmarte, late at night should be avoided. if alone, I wouldn't take it past dinner time. The metro at Pigalle, (also Montmarte), I'd avoid as well. And finally, Chatelet has a reputation for night time, but its one of the busiest stations in Paris so I've always found that confusing. Bottom line, any of the stations can be empty after 10:30, be alert like always and if it doesn't feel right, leave and take a taxi.

Stay away from the Montmartre stations in the Pigalle area at night, especially Barbes-Rochechouart. Other than that, let your own intuition be your guide. If the station gives you the creeps, for whatever reason, leave and walk to the next one or grab a cab. The further you get from the city center, the more likely you are to find deserted stations. Just plan on being closer in at night, or taking a cab.

And Chatelet is a freakin' nightmare, no matter when you're there. It's too big, it's too long to get from one line to another, it's always really crowded it's a great place to *exit* (I'll go two stops out of my way or walk a half mile to avoid changing trains there).
