How safe is the metro/rer at night

We'll be staying at the Trianon Palace in Versailles. We'll be in Paris at night (probably not past 11). We're planning on riding the metro/rer back and forth. I know this will take a long time. I'm not concerned. I am wondering if this will be the safest thing to do. Would we be better off taking a taxi back to Versailles at night. We do have a budget to condsider, but I don't want to make any stupid mistakes...

I would not be concerned, though obviously take the usual precautions. The only places I feel unsafe in Paris late at night (midnight or later) are the Chatelet and St-Michel métro stations and the train stations and their attendant metro stops.

I agree with StCirc. I find those places comfortable, too. It may be a false sense of security, but I'm always surprised how many people are riding the metro late at night.

We rode the metro on New Year's Night/Day from Place d'Italie to the 7th with a group of under 20's celebrating the new year and had no problems. As already stated, just be aware of your surroundings and you'll be okay.

E,
just came back from Paris and at night we either take the bus or metro back to the hotel between 9-11:30pm. We made sure to avoid transfer that stop at Pigalle or Gare D Est stations and while waiting for the metro on the platform we stood right next to the "Alarm" sign where you can push the button in case something happens.
have fun!
