Nice for trains

My husband and I are going to France in June.We are spending six days before meeting family to do a tour of Provence. We will be based in Aix for the tour<
.It is an educational Art based tour.> Should we take the train to Nice and do sightseeing along the coast from there?Any suggestions for an itinerary and places to stay?Is a car necessary?

I would rent a car - peace of mind - flexibility - able to see small towns along the way - stop when you want.
Where are you flying in to?

Nice would be a wonderful base for six days, but if you're interested in going there, I'd focus on finding a hotel ASAP. June is a very busy time in Nice.

If you post your budget, I'd be happy to make some recommendations. Since Nice has excellent transportation options to other towns and cities along the coast, I don't recommend getting a car. Parking is expensive when available, and traffic in and out of Nice anyway can be a total hassle!

Good luck, and post again if you have other questions.

Dear 4totravel,we are flying in and out of Marseilles. My thought was to take a train to Nice and perhaps use that as a base for seeing Monaco or Monte Carlo for day trips.I have only been to Nice once, but one of my children attended French School and lived in Ville Franch<sp?>for a summer.I know she took lots of trains from Nice.

Dear Weadles, My thought was to use Nice as a base.Do you know if the trains actually GO to the little villages? I read that there is one train <old book> that ,at least, used to go on a scenic trip.
Any itinerary suggestions for the six days? Two in Nice, one in Monaco????
Costs are up for grabs.I don't know what the Hotels will cost in that area.In New York-$150 to 200 for a nice place-booked ahead....In Nice?Thanks......open for suggestions.....Nancytoon
