(1) What would be the best and least expensive type transportation pass, including using the metro, to buy for that period of time?
(2) Where would I buy such a pass?

Before you buy any pass or extended-use ticket, check with your school to see if being a student entitles you to any sort of discount.

At the risk of seeming to encourage you to behave foolishly in any crowded urban area, I do want to post that public transportation in Milan is not noted for criminality and is generally considered quite safe at all hours. I would be more concerned about crossing the street!

The website you posted went into more details, zeppole, but basically said the same thing I was trying to convey. Even a good Italian friend whom is a resident of Milan had his wallet pickpocketed one evening when going home from work. He was tired from a long day and not being aware as he usually is.

I can't find anything in that link I posted that says public transportation in Milan is more unsafe or pickpocket prone than any other busy part of Milan. In fact, it notes that public transportation runs all night and is usually well populated, and therefore safe. It suggests that walking is more risky at night.

Perhaps I misread your post, but you seemed to be suggesting that an added special caution was in order using public transportation in Milan. I don't think it is.

Just to be clear: I think there are times when being alarmist about using public transport in an Italian city is warranted: many bus routes in Rome, the train station and ferry docks of Napoli. But being alarmist about Milan's public transportation system suggests a false picture, which is not to say you can't pickpocketed there just like you can be taking pictures of the Duomo, but every post on Fodor's about an Italian city doesn't need advice to mind your valuables while in transit. Most travelers know to do so.

steve - Here is the Milan metro website. I was recently looking at metro passes for an upcoming visit, but for a shorter time length than you. I'm sure month passes are listed also.
