Metro or Walk from Termini to Colosseo?
I'll be arriving in Rome at Termini Station around 2 pm and leaving through the station at 11 pm a few days later. Since I'll have my bags with me and will clearly be a tourist, I was wondering what would be safest for me to avoid both pickpockets and muggers on both journeys, at different times of day--walking out of the station and to my accommodation or changing to the Metro inside Termini. Thanks so much for any advice!

I'd not worry about mugging, 50% of everyone will be a tourist. Have a plan, get it in your mind and stick to it (don't stare at your phone to tell you where to go). Don't stand around at a road junction with loads of people looking lost (see also bus or Metro).
I'd not have anything on me to worry about pickpockets and you can meet them on the street, bus or in the Metro.
With luggage I'd take the Metro, its about 20 minutes walk between the two but what with finding the place and handling luggage I'd plan for 30 minutes.

How far is your accommodation from Termini? For me, the distance would inform my decision - walking say 2km with luggage I'd be more concerned with cobblestones, crossing streets, etc then I would with pickpockets or muggers.... Muggers. Rome isn't a lawless place where thugs atack people on the street... I won't comment on that happening in places like MN...
And how much luggage will you have? One small roller bag and a backpack is very different than a large heavy suitcase + extras.. Personally, if it was 0.5km to my hotel, I'd just walk. Anything over that I'd hop in a taxi, or if the hotel is close to the Metro stop, hop on the Metro.

Try to look like you know where you're going. If anyone tries to engage with you, don't hesitate, don't stop, don't engage in eye contact, just keep walking. This will sound over the top, but learn the Italian words for stop, and help. Hopefully you will never need them. Safe travels.

I'm wondering just how much you want to save? A taxi wouldn't cost that much.
And a side note...bilboburgler says it's 20 minutes to walk to the metro. Since he's an avid cyclist, I'm thinking he might be a fast walker? Might take you longer (it certainly would take me longer! 😀 ). Do you want that with luggage?

Best option: stay inside Termini and take the Metro rather than walking out with your bags. Its simpler, busier, and you wont stand out as much.
Outside Termini isnt scary, but walking around with luggage clearly marks you as a tourist.
Same advice for departure at night: Metro from inside the station, in and out, no wandering around outside.
Youll be fine just move with purpose and dont overthink it.
