Nope, no nightmares. It didn't knock me out and it didn't help the jet lag one bit, either. It was a total nothing.

Melatonin gave me loads of nightmares. At least I had tried it before the big trip. Anyhow, you could just take Benadryl (or generic version) - it is the same med as Sominex and I think also Tylenol PM. Otherwise Ambien (rx only) works very well.

Sominex does contain Benadryl ( diphenhydramine ) as does Tylenol PM ( along with the Tylenol, of course )

I definitely never had nightmares from melatonin. I tried it during a few trips two to four years ago. On those trips I had much less of a problem with jet lag while I was in Europe. However, those were also the trips when I tried preventing jet lag by another means, namely making sure that I got plenty of sunshine and exercise upon arrival at my destination, instead of taking a nap or going to bed very early. On my last few trips I forgot the melatonin but continued the light-and-exercise tactic, and I had little if any jet lag. My conclusion is that light and exercise are more important that anything else in re-setting my own biological clock. However, if I ever have to travel an extraordinary distance (e.g., to Asia) or to Europe under circumstances when the light-and-exercise trick will be impossible to do, I will try melatonin again, since I had no adverse effects from it.

The only thing that ever helped me really sleep on a flight was a combination of allergy, clogged sinuses, breathing difficulties and Benadryl on an awful flight on Olympic when smoking was allowed and the smoke refused to stop at the invisible border between the smoking and nonsmoking sections.

Melatonin gives me weird, but rather interesting dreams. A friend I frequently travel with must have nightmares because she moans and cries when she sleeps after taking it. She never remembers it though.

I only took Melatonin a few times. I did not have nightmares, but did have vivid dreams I remembered after awakening. This was very unusual (for me), because without Melatonin I never remember my dreams.

Do you think maybe melatonin alters the late period of sleep--the period before we wake up--or the relative lenght of various stages in the sleep cycle? Maybe that's why some of you remember your dreams when you're on melatonin.

it amazes me that so many people have without scientific corobration taken melatonin. the exact way the drug works, the correct dosage, the metabolic pathways that handles the drug after ingestion, the purity of the drug or even if the dose listed opn the package is accurate as to what is actually contained in the ssample. there have been no really good studies done in the us that answer these questions and why people would take an unknown comodity beats me. just remember hormones are very active in the body and i would tend to be very carefau relying on some health food store person telling me data especially since he/sshe has something directly to gain if if buy th4 stuff. maybe a lot more careful consideration is required before we cram this drug down out mouth
