Husband just turned 65. has medicare and blue cross medigap policy. out of country travel - medicare covers nothing. BC covers only if go to emergency room. what do other people do? IS this enough? need another policy? ( we have medjet for real emergencies to fly us home - Out of country 2-3 times a year).

Standard Medicare coverage ends at the US border. Medigap policies vary, so check with your carrier, and be very specific in your questions - i.e., what is/is not covered, what is the exact procedure to follow if care is needed while abroad.
There are some Medicare +Choice (the ones you choose instead of standard medicare, not the medi-gap ones) groups that cover outside the US. My mom was enrolled in one (Aetna, I think) when she had to be hospitalized in Switzerland. They coverd everything with no question, and there was never a problem.

There are several travel insurance companies. They all have websites. Travel Guard is one I use but more for their coverage on default of travel businesses than medical. Most have a clause that you an get pre-existing illness covered if you buy the policy within 7 days of the first money paid on the trip. Try insuremytrip.com to compare the various travel insurance companies.

I have used travel ex insurance several times. They paid for my son staying over night in a hospital and for my other son's emergency room visit. the website is:

My experience with them has been excellent.

It's hard to say, but over the age of 65, you might want to buy travel insurance with health coverage for security reasons, even though you have the Medjet (which is a good idea). It might be a better idea for you to buy a travel health insurance policy by the year, if you can, if you are gone a couple times. I think those are generally cheaper than buying a more expensive Medigap policy as it covers other things beyond the foreign travel that you may not need or want. All Plans C-J cover foreign travel, however, so you must have the cheapest (A or B). Those plans only cover 80 pct of charges, however, and are limited to 60 days. Check www.insuremytrip.com for comparisons to the Medigap extra premiums for a more deluxe plan. Plan C may be about $10 a month more than Plan B, in my experience, so you'd be paying perhaps $120 a year (I'm a consultant in the health insurance field so have seen various rate tables). However, Plan C also covers yours A/B deductibles and has some extra SNF coverage, I believe.

When my partner turned medicare age, he searched for a supplemental that would cover him overseas. He got one through Principal Mutual and he feels it is a great policy. This was important as we spend up to 5 months in Europe. No need for additional travel/medical insurance with that policy.

Christina,
One over 65 doesn't buy medigap insurance for coverage overseas, but instead to cover the costs above the 80% paid by medicare for hospital and doctors charges.
Plan C thru J covers these extra charges as well as 80% coverage for the first 60 days overseas for medical emergencies.
Therefore, a 65 yr old would not forsake the benefits of medigap insurance in order to buy travel insurance.
However, they could buy additional insurance for foreign travel but not as an alternative to Medigap insurance.

I know why many people buy Medicap because I'm a consultant in the field and have worked for Medicare. Whether this makes fiscal sense to buy a policy to covered expenses that are not what insurance traditionally covers is another question. Insurance is meant to cover catastrophic not predictable events. Furthermore, some people don't need Medigap policies depending on what other insurance they may have from a spouse's employement, the military, or other retirement sources, such as the Federal govt.

In any case, Joanel already has a medigap policy, perhaps you didn't notice that. So the choice was whether to buy a separate travel insurance policy or buy a more deluxe Medigap policy than they apparently think they need based on what they have already bought.
