Meal in Assisi
We will be traveling with a group (I know!) to Assisi soon and our meals are all with our group. But if by some chance we can 'escape' and go out to dinner or lunch, is there a special place that anyone would recommend? Grazie!

San Francesco on via di San Francesco has a wonderful view of the basilica, but I don't recommend this place if you're pressed for time. It's too good and fairly expensive. If gnocchi is offered, order it! FYI, Assisi closes up pretty early in the evening.

This past August we did our third trip to Italy including our first stay in Assisi. Up to this point nothing could match our dinner at a winery near Montalcino, but dinner at Taverna dei Consoli in Piazza del Comune has easily surpassed that. My husband had mixed grilled meats and "baked" potato (actually roasted potatoes with rosemary - that may explain why the waiter looked at him like he had two heads when he asked for butter). I had boiled sausage with polenta and asparagus. It sounds like simple fare but it was amazingly flavorful. The service was impeccable, and the setting on a second floor terrace overlooking the piazza was picturesque.
To get there, you'd walk past the Temple of Minverva on your left towards the fountain, just as you reach the fountain there's a passageway on your left with steps leading up a hill. Take the steps and it will be a short distance on your left.

Hi R,
On my last trip I stayed 1 unplanned night in Assisi. My hotel owner recommended a wonderful restaurant outside the walls called Paradiso de la Terme. Loved it! Completely untouristy, family run, lovely service, fabulous traditional Umbrian food. Very nice restaurant, but warm and welcoming. Reasonably priced too!
It would be a bit of a walk, but you could do a short taxi ride!
Buon apetito!
