Maybe a ridiculous question but one worth discussing. What would happen if Americans and Canadians boycotted the Euro? No travel or buy any European products for a month.

What makes the US dollar weak is the huge accumulated trade deficit. Buying more than selling causes that, nothing else.

"what if that Americans decided to forgo any travel that involved the euro and boycotted all european imports? "

The Europeans won't notice.

The Americans would suffer

Why would Americans WANT to boycott the euro? Traveller 1959 put it in clear perspective - it's not the euro that is high, it's the dollar that is low.

Palen , maybe they( tourism officals,) are confused, I know that no one tips like the Americans,( still not convinced about the spending, ) , having worked in tourism years ago, we LOVED Americans.. they tipped us for saying hello sometimes, LOL
If I worked in tourism that would be one reason I would miss American tourists for sure( and I am not kidding) . ( I would also miss Texsans cause they talk so neat and are very friendly. LOL )

I think travelers from other countries might be more likely to visit there, since there'll be a few less people. But it wouldn't do much. The rest of the world is visiting, too.

I do plan on going to Rome sometime in the next 5 years, and I'm not going to change my mind on it. It's too important!

Are we on MTV? Because I think we're being punk'd.

Your question isn't crazy, it's just self-centered and hilarious.

I don't know if you've ever seen a map or if you ever took geography in school, but there are a lot of countries in the world besides the US. This may be shocking to you, but there are a lot of people in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Oceania who visit Europe on a regular basis.

Do you think tourism in Europe stricly oriented towards the US? Because you tried to include Canada so as not to sound self-centered, but it's so obvious you only meant the US.

You may think that the US is the only country on Earth, but for Europeans and the rest of the world, the US is just another country like any other.

I know that the year has just started, but that's certainly "the joke" of 2008.

Seriously Ashton, stop it already, we know we've just gotten punk'd.

it's a rare thing to read anything positive about Americans on this board, even from Americans! An American just questions the price of wine or food in Paris or asked about Gypsy pickpockets in Rome and all hell breaks loose but, people trash talk America and her citizens and nobody comes to her defence? If you people hate America so bad, including so called Americans. Why don't you just leave or don't come here? Boycott us, we can take it. I for one am sick of reading all the smack about this great country. Believe it or not America is still the greatest country on Earth.

This has to be one of the funniest threads.

We don't need you, Chinese will replace you in a heartbeat...

What a joke?

Tell that to the tourism officials in France, UK, Italy, etc....

They will tell you that you are nothing short of an imbecile!

Perhaps 20-50 years from now, that statement can be made with some validity but for anybody that proclaims to be an expert in the tourism trade to make that statement today shows their lack of any knowledge of anything to do with international tourism.

Go ahead, tell the high end hotels, restaurant owners, tour organizers that the Americans are not needed and they will be replaced with big spending Russians, Chinese....

I'm not saying that they are none, but the Russians and Chinese big spenders are in the minority in the international tourism business at the moment. For every Russian/Chinese millionare there are 1000 American millioners willing to spend big bucks during their vacations.

Millionaires not required. There are so many Chinese that even if the upper middle class is still tiny considering the total population, it is already pushing the American tourists aside.

Times have changed, like it or not.

So long as Americans say such arrogant things, there will be people who have an adverse reaction to American attitudes.

Padraig, Why is it arrogant to think my country is the greatest on Earth? Ask a German or Frenchmen and they'll say their country is the greatest and no one will say a thing about it!

No, most of them wouldn't, actually, precisely because our forefathers spent most of a century coping with the consequences of those who went around acting on such ideas. And even fewer would make a point of making a great song and dance about it without the question even being asked.

Pinch me: I respectfully think you need to understand that thinking one's country is "the greatest on earth" is all well and fine until it starts getting in the way of reality or is used as some sort of rationale to bully one's way across the planet or to ignore the fact that NO country is going to be able to survive without the help of some other countries and at least interacting peacefully with many others.

People here who are bored at their keyboards in other countries can "trash" the US all they want and they've been doing it for quite a while.

We forego reminding them of it when they come whining later, looking for handouts, foreign aid, help with their latest disaster or war intervention.

Move on and please be aware that most of what you are wearing was probably made in one of those countries you think isn't nearly as great as ours.

Pinchme, I live in Ireland, and it suits me so well that I don't want to live anywhere else. That is not the same as declaring that my country is the greatest on earth.

To trumpet such things is arrogant, because it is another way of saying that anybody else's country is less than yours.

If a German or a Frenchman (or woman) made a similar claim about his or her country, I would be equally vexed. But I really think it happens a great deal less with them.

I make exceptions for sports fans in the context of international games.

I think the question is a bit naive. I am not an economist, but the weak and getting weaker by the moment dollar is the reason for the strength of the euro. I see it as good for US companies who sell to foreign markets, but for the consumer it means higherprices, higher cost of living and of course, more expensive to travel abroad. Our country has contributed to this by the low interest rates that seem to cater to the financial markets which seem to be in an up and down state of collapse. Also rising inflation and the massive domestic trade deficit that we have. I'm sure there is so much more to it, but the US has to take responsibility for our financial problems. I hope to be able to continue traveling to Europe or anywhere else for that matter. The cost of living in the US is skyrocketing and the dollar continues to fall hurting us where we live.

Pinchme,

Well, when some people from whatever country start saying we're the best in the world, everybody wants to live here, we are the light of the world, we are going to bring democracy to the world....it kind of reminds me of a cheerleader. Yes, she is pretty, yes she may dress well, but by focusing on herself all the time, she may annoy those around her, even those who may agree with her. Greatness is a product that sells itself.

Have you been to every country in the world? Have you lived in another country? What is your basis for saying it is the greatest country in the world? I can find stats that rank the USA below #1 in many categories, does this affect your statement? This is not an attack on the country, but it's pointing out a pimple or two on the cheerleader.

I still say Canada is #1.

Oh, and by the way, China and Japan are financing the war in Iraq. Feel free to thank them.
