May Day in Budapest

Hi. I am planning a trip to Budapest (then Vienna and Prague) from April 28 - May 2. I am wondering if anyone knows if tourist sites and museums will be open on May 1. Since we don't celebrate May Day in the US, I don't really know if things close down or not. Since all the museums are closed on Monday, and May Day is on Tuesday, I am wondering if I will be able to see all the places I want to visit. Thanks.

I don't recall that ever being a problem, and don't think it a holiday in any case. On the odd occasion when a holiday would have resulted in two days closed in a row for museums, I believe they opened on the Monday. In any event, with 5 days, there will be plenty open for you to get to where you want. Certainly, the castle district is open, the zoo, and on and on.

Thanks for the reply Rod. It's listed in the Frommer's guide as a holiday, but that's all. Hopefully it will all work out.

Hi, Mel

It is a holiday.I've called for you the most important museums. The National Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts will be open, the Natinal gallery could not tell it yet.Public holidays are allways complicated in Hungary, because everybody wants continous holiday to go to the weekend house, but there is no compulsory policy. As for the opening times Sat will be Fri, Sun will be Sat, Mon will be Sun.For one 1/3 of the shops, for the other 1/3 Mon will be Sat,so they will be open only in the morning, and for the last 1/3 Mon will be Mon, so they will be open until 6pm.May Day only the souvenir shops will be open.I'm sure we are the only country to have this stupid system.( I do not have a weekend house)
If you have any question regarding Hungary feel free to ask.
Eva

Eva: You are wonderful! That was very kind of you to call the museums. Thank you for the explanation. I am sure I will have more questions as May approaches. I am very excited about visiting Budapest.
