May 17 in Paris: What Will Be Closed?
I know that in recent years fewer shops, stores are closed than formerly, but since I will be arriving back in Paris that afternoon and flying home the next morning, I had hoped to do some last minute shopping for small items at Monoprix, La Grande Epicerie, etc. Does anyone know?

I was amazed about 8 years ago that all sorts of things were closed when we got there - since this is a holiday I had never heard of - and France isn't really heavily religious. I guess any excuse for a day off.

I can't speak about supermarkets, but my neighborhood cafe didn't open until 10ish, the non-chain bakery closed by then, and certainly places like Bon Marche and retail clothing and furnishing establishments were closed. Traiteurs open.

I, too, will be in Paris on 17 May. I had forgotten this was Ascension. We had planned a daytrip to Giverny. Shall I assume the train schedules remain the same, and that Monet's garden and house will be open? Many thanks!

I would assume that the trains would run on a holiday or Sunday schedule and that you ought to enquire directly to the house and perhaps to the American museum to determine whether they will be open and, if so, what hours.
