After doing several searches for threads on this subject, I am still unclear if France does in fact require Mandatory rental risk insurance as my rental agency, parisattitude indicates.

According to their website and other emails, docs we've recieved they state "rental risk insurance is MANDATORY in France for damages caused by fire, explosion or water."

Shouldn't the apartment owner be required to have insurance for this?

Isn't my security deposit of 1350euros intended to cover any damage that we could possibly cause?

If this is actually required by French law, where would you buy such insurance? I have only run across trip insurance.

The agency does recommend someone and provides a link, however the site appears to be all in french and I could find no option for english text. I'd rather know what I'm purchasing.

You don't say whether you're renting short-term or long-term. For the latter, the renter is always required to take out insurance. I don't know whtehr this is the law, of simply a boilerplate lease clause, but it makes perfect sense. The owner also has insurance, but if the renter is responsible for damage. (lets the bathtub run over; falls asleep while smoking and starts a fire) the owner's insurance does not cover the damage.

My understanding in the US has always been that the landlord/owner has insurance on the property. The rentors insurance only covers the rentors personal property. That's why this is confusing to me.

Momof3, call your insurance broker and find out whether your own house insurance covers things like that. I just checked mine a couple of months ago and confirmed that I am covered for property damage to short-tern rentals anywhere in the world.

Hi robjame. I missed your other post. Our house insurance is with ING and the wording on the policy is quite specific about covering my liability for damage. Called the broker and confirmed it, too.

I asked the same question a few months back and didn't get much of a response either except that someone suggested that I contact my homeowners' insurance agency.

I sent them a copy of the wording on my apt. contract in Paris and they got back with me the same day to say I was covered through them.
