Malta Airport to Gozo or Stay on Malta late night arrival
We are arriving at the Malta airport at 21:00 on a Tuesday. In your experience, is it too late to travel from airport to a hotel in Gozo (either St Lawrenz or Xlenti )? Should we stay on the island of Malta? I believe the ferries do make night crossings and we are traveling from US with a layover in London and then flight to Malta so it will be a long trip but would love to sleep in the next morning and want to be in Gozo for a few days. Has anyone done the Malta Airport to Gozo route? We have already visited Valletta and are planning 5 days in St Julien's after Gozo so that is an additional already planned part of the trip.

We've stayed on Malta and Gozo and as long as you can be sure the ferries are running that late, I'd go on to Gozo the evening that you arrive. We used Mayjo car hire company, initially to hire a jeep on Gozo, and then because we were impressed with their service, we ended up booking a car to pick us up from the ferry in Malta (after returning from Gozo) and drive us to Malta airport. It was quick and easy from memory.
There are buses to the ferry terminal and we did that once but with luggage it was a little difficult as there was no luggage space and the bus was pretty full. We managed but the car service and driver was much easier, as you'd imagine.
I would email Mayjo, or another company if you find one you prefer, and enquire. Also you'd have to check if your accommodation on Gozo will have someone on reception that late at night.
Here is the link for Mayjo, they get excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. We loved Malta and thought the people in general were so friendly and helpful.

Another thing to think about is if your flight is delayed you could miss the car transfer and the ferry. Staying on Malta for the night is the safer option and you'd see the views during a day crossing.

Any chance you can flip your hotel reservation - St Julien's first? That would be a far simpler transfer from Malta airport upon arrival. To get to Gozo it would take maybe 2-3hrs to get to your hotel in Gozo after flight arrival, more if you miss a ferry. Late night ferry schedules are found here. https://www.gozochannel.com/en/schedules.htm You can see they are space out by about 90 minutes (off season) or 45min (summer) which means you could have a long wait in the middle of the night waiting for the next ferry.
