Would like to visit both towns as a day trip. Would it be ok to try to see both in a single day? Are the travel logistics easy enough to do on my own or should I take a commercial tour? What are the must do’s at both locations? Lunch and drink recommendations welcome.
I haven't been there but presume there are tourism websites that tell you the main interests.
It ios easy to get to/from Malaga and Nerja, I know that, there are many buses and they take 1-1.5 hrs, something like that. HEre is the schedule (run by ALSA). It is line M362.

I don't believe there is any public transportation between Nerja and Frigiliana. It's not that far, you could take a taxi if you really want to go there and think there is something unique there to see.
Personally, I think it would be a lot easier to book a day trip if you want to see both in the same day. The ones I saw on Viator weren't even a full day which seems a bit short, though. Price was reasonable for the convenience though.

We spent a month in Nerja a few years back now but I remember that they had a number of good restaurants especially with the large expat community. More ethnic cuisine choices than most cities of that size in Spain. One of the local places we liked a lot was called Cafeteria Cibeles-they had this amazing steak cooked on a stone at the table

Stayed in Nerja for 3 early summer weeks, and got the bus up to Frigiliana a couple of times.
The things to consider about the bus are, they can get get full. Not too bad in the mornings, but for the return in the afternoon everyone seems to want to return to Nerja at about the same time. So either get to the bus stop allowing plenty of time, or get a taxi back down to Nerja. Walking down is also a possibility if you're up to it.
It's also worth checking the weather forecast before setting off to Frigiliana. Our first visit started off in Nerja in brilliant sunshine. Within minutes of arriving in Frigiliana we were in a deluge of monsoon proportions, which as as well as making exploring impossible, the visibility was severely restricted allowing for zero views.
While Frigiliana is a very scenic little place, it gets very very busy.
Nerja Caves are a must-see. Lots of steps so for anyone with mobility issues they ain't for you.
The sea around Nerja suffered from pollution, so if swimming in the sea floats your boat I'd check the current situation.
Overall, Nerja is a very pretty place to visit/stay. Lots of tapas bars.
