Mainz to St. Goar, by boat?

I am trying to find out if it is possible to take a boat from Mainz to St. Goar, on the Rhine.

We will be staying in Colmar, France, and then heading to explore the Rhine. I thought it might be fun to take the train to Mainz, and then a boat to St. Goar (instead of driving). I can't seem to find a boat that we can jump on in Mainz.

Any thoughts?

The big player on the Rhine is Koeln-Duesseldorfer Lines. Click the link on the home page for the latest brochure. Their winter season runs through March 30. http://www.k-d.de/englisch

The most scenic part of the river is the Rhine gorge between Ruedesheim and St Goar. A plethora of castles and extraordinary geological formations.

It's possible but unwise. The River between Mainz and Bingen is dull. Take the train to Bingen and proceed from there by boat - short walk to the docks.

You're talking after April 1, right? I think that's roughly when the boats start running regularly.

St Goar is nice and very tiny... Boppard is a good town to visit, too. Loved the chair-lift there.

Thanks for the advice. I have also read that the best place to get on the boat is Bingen, but it looks like a long and inefficient train ride from Colmar to there. Any thoughts on that? What is the best and simplest website for planning a train route like this? What I found is that I have to go to Strasbourg, Fr and then to Frankfurt (maybe there was even a change in between) and then on to Bingen.

It's about 4 hours if you leave at 8:01 or 10:06 in the am:

Thanks for the confirmation. Four hours on the train will be a killjoy for my 5 and 8 yr olds (esp since we will have taken a 3 hr trip Paris to Colmar a few days earlier). I guess the best thing to do is rent a car...

Does it make sense to drive to Bingen (sp?), park, take the boat to Boppard or St. Goar have lunch and spend some time, then take the train back to Bingen to pick up the car, and then drive to Oberwesal to hotel.

Is this a crazy route, should we just plan to see the area below Oberwesal by car?
