What did you mean TexasAggie?I would like it a lot to be the owner of the hotel but it is little difficult.I suppose that Adrian hotel is yours after clerks positive comments for that. You cannot occupy that clerks your opinion only you for hotels that have remained. For this I request you knock some sense!

Johnbelt,

Oftentimes when someone registers and only posts one glowing report of a hotel in a foreign country, and when it is obvious that the person is not a native English speaker, it turns out that the poster is associated with the hotel. Your post sent up red flags for these reasons.

To accuse me, a poster for several years, of being associated with any hotel in Greece is utterly ludicrous and you are not gaining any credibility. April-May 2006 was the first time I have ever visited Greece and my entire trip is well documented in my trip report, including my use of a travel agency (Dolphin-Hellas) to book all of our accomodations.

Personally I know nothing of Magna Grecia hotel, nor do I care whatsoever. I just noticed that your post sent out all the signals of being a disguised advertisement. If it was not so, I apologize and I encourage you to post more details and tips from your visits to Greece so that other travellers may benefit.

TexasAggie,
Apologize but I don't agree with what you said.I didn't say that my English is perfect because it is not my maternal language and I know that. But I cannot occupy you, if we don't speak perfect English we cannot write a review for a hotel that has remained? Really I cannot occupy you and is very curious your behavior!!I didn't know that you are expert in particularly understand everything for the other and seer!I don't want to enter in the process to argued for any hotel and only I wanted to say and is my opinion, that when we remained with my wife in Magna Grecia Hotel really liked it us too much and also still we speak to our family for this. Finally in order to untied to you your query why I have Greek email is why I live in Crete, a Greek island, with my family and in December 2006 we had remained 4 days. Maybe prohibit do write our opinions do Greeks that have remained in Greek hotel? If yes, apologize but you are unique.

Hi Johnbelt,

Please accept my apology as it certainly appears your review of the hotel was genuine. But do know that unfortunately, it has become common for posters to register and post one wonderful review about a hotel and it later turns out to be an advertisement in disguise. If you stick around, you will probably see it.

I am happy that was not the case here. No apology for less than perfect English is necessary... I have been taking Greek lessons for a year and my Greek is still quite poor

As you live in Crete, I do hope you will come back and post here occasionally. More and more people are starting to visit Greece and I am sure they would greatly appreciate any information and tips you have.

I remain suspicious as to whether johnbelt is a legitimate poster, or just a shill for magna grecia. I agree with TexasAggie's original assesment that he is advertising in violation of fodor's rules. I note the only message johnbelt has posted is this one touting magna grecia. The language used in his email (not his use of english but the advertising terms like bragging on "cocomat" linens) is just like the language used by magna grecia in its promotional literature.

Hi tom,
I wondered that too... never heard of it.

Thanks for the support Eleni. I truly didn't want to come across as antagonistic or as someone just picking on an innocent newcomer, but after re-reading the posts... my first instinct that it was a thinly veiled advertisement has returned.

Cocomat is the brand name of a company that makes mattresses and bed linens in Greece.

I was just looking at the magna grecia site and noted this comment, supposedly from a guest named john from los angeles, who sounds remarkably like johnbelt who is posting here as someone from crete. Check it out: http://www.magnagreciahotel.com/gues...8&start1=4

Then I went to tripadvisor and the review for 11/27/2005 is almost exactly the same as the one here.

ALSO, the tripadvisor reviewer for 7/26/2005 had EXACTLY the same experience with the Magna Grecia we did. Same exact lies from the owners. Same exact being shunted off to the Central Hotel instead of being able to stay at the Magna Grecia. SO BEWARE of this hotel. It sounds like it is nice if you actually get to stay there, but BE PREPARED to be lied to, not given a room, and being forced to stay at a hotel of lesser quality several blocks away.

here's another review almost identical to johnbelt's (complete with identical quotation marks and exclamation marks and references to cocomat) supposedly from maria in london: http://www.greece-athens.com/reviews.php?member_id=180

these are NOT legitimate reviews -- another reminder to be careful and double-check all information before booking!

Good investigative work, Eleni! Those reviews are definitely too similar not to be coming from the same person.

P.S. Hi Eleni,
You might want to post about your experience on www.tripadvisor.com. It could definitely help other travellers avoid a potentially bad sitation.

After reading this thread and a lot of other similar negative comments online we've decided to cancel our stay at Magna Grecia and choose another hotel. It sounds as if it's a wonderful place but I'm very wary of having our prepaid reservation bumped and being lied to. That wouldn't be a great way to start my vacation!
Thanks all for sharing your experiences.
