madrid, toledo and ?
heading to madrid for a business trip with two friends hoping to join at the end. I think that Sevilla is too far to head to for a Friday night if we have to fly out on Monday from Madrid, so we were looking at Toledo for Saturday and Sunday nights. Are there day trips / places that are interesting to see near Toledo as well.
The itinerary would be Madrid Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, train to Toledo Saturday in time for dinner, stay in Toledo Saturday night. We have a reservation in Toledo fro Sunday night and would travel back to Madrid early Monday. So if Toledo is not a place Fodorites would suggest spending the whole day Sunday and Sunday night in, where would be good?
Is it difficult to take the train from Toledo to Madrid and then to the Madrid airport?
Thanks!

When are you arriving in Madrid? If you are just getting there Thursday or Friday, then I would reconsider do any days trips. The 1st time we were in Spain, we treated Madrid as a pit stop, somewhere we HAD to go to catch a plane home. In the half day we were there we were so impressed with the city and its energy, that we went back and included it as part of a trip. The art museums, especially the Prado are fantastic. IMO, better then the Louvre, because it's more manageable, but the art's as good. The Palace is gorgeous, the nightlife and restaurants, fabulous! It derves at the very least 2 full days. I also love Toledo, but you can do that as a day trip on Sunday morning and train back on Monday. Or go north to Segovia for a day trip. It may take a little longer, but the drive is beautiful and dramatic a place as Toledo.

unless your flight is in the p.m. i would not consider coming in from ANYWHERE other than the city to catch a flight.
alcala de henares is quite interesting. visit cervante´s birth home and see the original porticoed streets and lovely museums and historic buildings.
plenty of storks´ nests to snap pics of, too.
