madrid/Monday meals
hi, we arrive in Madrid Monday am, and i want to make res for lunch (as we may not make it till dinner!) I was thinking of the Asador Fronton on Tirso de Molina. Does anyone know if its open Mon. and what time restaurants generally open for lunch. Any other suggestions - we are staying near the Teatro Real. thanks..

gail,
Asador Fronton is open on Mon. and from 1 p.m. on. (for dinner from 9 p.m. on) It's only closed on Sun evening.
Madrid restaurants generally open for lunch at 1 (a few) or 1:30. The more normal eating hr. for madrilenos is between 2-2:30.

gail,
Restaurants we like in the Teatro Real area:
for brk., snacks, lunch, dinner or dessert:
Cafe del Oriente, across from Royal Palace
Always open
for tapas sitting at marble tables behind the bar, in a fin de siecle ambience:
La Taberna del Alabardero Always open
for red meat (still sizzling on the platter-you finish off the cooking as you like it):
El Buey, at Plaza de la Marina Espanola, near the Senate Closed Sun. night
for Madrid's signature dish, "cocido" (a type of pot-au-feu):
La Bola on the corner of Guillermo Roland and Bola (look for the bright red-green facade-a hangout of Ava Gardner and her bullfighter boyfriends) Closed Sun. night
for classic Madrid tavern fare on a romantic square plus interesting people watching:
El Lando on Plaza Gabriel Miro
(great "huevos estrellados", "pan con tomate", fresh grilled asparagus, impeccably fresh fish, red meats, rice pudding, huge portions-a cousin of Casa Lucio on the Cava Baja) Closed Sun.
