I suggest taking the high speed AVE train to Cordoba or Sevilla, then renting a car there. We flew into Madrid, took the AVE to Sevilla. Stayed a couple of days in Sevilla then rented a car and drove to Ronda onto Nerja. It only took a couple of hours. If you are real pressed for time, have you looked into flying? That's a lot of driving time just to bypass all those wonderful towns in between!

If you don't mind driving and willing to pass up some really nice places in between, then drive it. If you have the time, I would take a nice leisurely drive to Marbella, stopping along the way. The country side of Spain is beautiful. You can also check out europebyair.com they have $99 fares within Europe.

Noticed yor post about airfare. Check Iberia.com - have cheap rates within Spain. I looked at flying from Madrid to Seville or Granada and each was $75 one-way at 8:30am and even cheaper at $28 if I flew at noon!
Have fun! When is your visit? We are planning a very last minute trip to Andulusia (sp?) for June 13-22 and looking at Marbella, also.
