Madrid hotel for teen traveling alone
Our 18 year old son is studying in Alicante for a month this summer. The program escorts the children to Alicante on their arrival but for the return they are on their own. He is flying back from Madrid and will be spending the night there alone before his flight home. Can anyone recommend an adequate/nice hotel in a safe, central location from which he could also do some sightseeing? It appears from my research that it is easy to get to the airport from the city - is that true? Thanks very much.

First of all I'd be concerned about a program that takes care of kids on their way into Spain but on their way home it's been fun and adios.....
My suggestion would be to stay closre to the airport, the Best Western at Batajas, they run a shuttle to/from the airport starting at 6AM and breakfast is included.Depending on what time he gets into Madrid he should check in,leave his luggage and take the metro into Madrid. He could try to take a tour of Madrid in the open buses-on/off so he can wander around in the Puerta del Sol and the Plaza Mayor. He should be feeling pretty confident after a month in Spain so what a one day adventure this could be!

Thanks very much to both of you for your feedback. I guess I made the program sound irresponsible which it isn't. Even though he is just starting college in September, our son wanted a college-level program because he has already studied Spanish for 5+ years. Most of the college students study for the month and then travel around Europe, so the return is open-ended. He just happens to be coming home to work a bit and prepare for college since he expects to return to Europe for a semester abroad program. It will be a great adventure for him.

If he decides to stay in the city itself, I second the suggestion to look at www.madridamn.com, as the discussion of hostals (basic, but good, lower-priced hotels, usually family run, not a "youth hostel") is excellent.

to get from the city to the airport, I recommend:

http://www.aerocity.com

However, there is a new subway line just finished, so that might be faster (I think it goes from nuevos ministerios to the airport in 12 minutes). good luck.

We just returned from Madrid. We were three single women traveling. We enjoyed the Hostal Las Fuentes on Calle Fuentes. It is a safe street, in the perfect location. 3min walk to Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and 15min to Prado, etc. The rooms were clean and safe. Soundproof too. We found them through www.madridman.com. Go to their website: www.hostallasfuentes.com

We also used Aerocity to pick us up at the airport. Very safe and reliable. A taxi will cost about 17euros from hotel to airport, but it was a quick 20min ride. Enjoy!
