I just returned from Madrid last week. I spent 4 days in Madrid and 1 day in Segovia and 1 in Toledo. I really liked Madrid but I loved Segovia and Toledo. We drove to both and even with Madrid traffic the trips were only about an hour. Make sure that you do the drive around Toledo, the views were fabulous.

I love Barcelona, but agree with all who say leave it for another trip. Madrid, Toledo and then Segovia are a perfect trip. On the way to Segovia we stopped in Avila and El Escorial and those were worthwhile too! The drive to Segovia from Toledo is beautiful.

We love Toledo and was glad that we spent a night there. It's one of those magical towns that transforms itself once the day-trippers left. If you've overnighted in Siena or Venice, you'll know what I mean.

"Young" opinion: You can do both easily. fly vueling madrid-bcn.
Both cities give you a really good impression of spain.
you also get the beach in Barcelona.
what sort of days are you flying in and out of madrid? (i.e. sun thru mon, midweek, etc.)

Just returned from a November 2007 7-night trip to Madrid and Barcelona. Visited Segovia, too.
Segovia is not, at present, served by high speed rail (as near as I could tell). It is only a short way outside the city, but it takes 2 hours by train. Even with 4 hours of commute time, my husband and I walked to the other side of town from the train station and saw the Cathedral, castle and aqueduct and meandered through town in a day (left Madrid at 10, returned at 7). We didn't eat in Segovia, because they really do observe siesta there. It is not necessitate an overnight stay, unless you really want to take your time.
Didn't visit Toledo, but heard good things.
Train to Barcelona takes about 4 hours, and there are many trains a day (no need for an overnight). However, they are doing trackwork in Barcelona, so all trains ended at Tarragona and bus caravans take you the remaining 100 km. If you don't buy tickets in advance, you may not get the train you want - we had to wait for a later train.
Plane takes 1 hour, and was cheaper than the train (though it would require higher cab fare).
