ann,
I encourage you to read the detailed and accurate information about transportation from the Madrid airport to the city that Jeremy has compiled on his web site, Multimadrid, noting particularly the special section, "Taxi Smarts" if you're planning on using a taxi. I must always choose taxi drivers with lead feet, but it's never taken me more than 30 or 40 min. from Barajas to downtown. The airport bus to Plaza Colón on the Castellana Blvd. mid-town takes exactly 20 min. mid-morning (I clock it),

You can find Jeremy's info here:
http://www.multimadrid.com/practical...transports.htm

It all depends on what time of day and which day you arrive. On a good day-Sunday morning-you can be there in about 30 minutes but on other days/times
it can take ages.Atocha station can also be overwhelming, depending on time/day,to get tickets and find the right track.Allow yourself plenty of time!
