Madrid Airport to Granada

Hi all,

If our flight from the U.S. lands at Madrid-Barajas Airport at 2:00 pm, is that too late to catch a train all the way to Granada? Or do I need to spend the first night in Madrid before departing for Granada? I am thinking about making a circle:

Arrive from L.A.
Granada: 2-3 nights
Sevilla: 3 weeks
Madrid 2-3 nights
Fly back to L.A.

Thank you in advance!

FWIW, last week we landed in Madrid at 08:45 at T4S.
Picked up the rental car at T4 at 09:48.
Business class, so we were first ones off the plane, no luggage.

A lot of these might be "All other passports".

Depends on what day it is. Look at RENFE.com to see the schedule of the trains. For the long distance you will need to prebook to get the obligatory seat(s).
The journey can take around 4 hours+/-. Then you have to get to and from airport and hotel. It will make fora very long day.
Alternatives is stay in Madrid or see if you can get a short haul to Granada.

The other idea is to go from Madrid to Seville first.

Can we take the train from the airport or do we have to go to the city and depart from a specific train station?

Yes maybe flying is the better way to go. Otherwise it appears that you come into one train station from the airport and have to walk to a different station to catch the train to Sevilla.

Thanks Vanaarle.

So much for Rome to Rio -- their site says it's a transfer from Madrid - Atocha Cercanías to Madrid-Puerta De Atocha, which to a tourist who is unfamiliar with Madrid, the Madrid train system and not a Spanish speaker, seems like I have to walk between stations.

Rome to Rio and Renfe certainly do not make it easy. I'll take a look at Seat61. That website was very helpful for my travel in Italy, France and England.

I am finally booking transportation from Madrid to Sevilla to Granada to Madrid this week. With our Iberia nonstop flight landing at 2:05 pm, I have two options:

Flights on Iberia are $70 at 3:55 pm and 7:45 pm.
My flights (LAX-MAD and MAD-SVQ) would be two separate tickets. I can see that the Iberia flight from LAX has landed 30-45 minutes early this entire month. From what I can tell on the Iberia website, none of the flight options are refundable and changes are $45. Sounds like flying onto Seviilla is not the way to go unless I re-book my entire trip from LA (which I guess I could do)

Trains are $75 from Madrid Pta. Atocha Almundena Grandes to Sevilla - Santa Justa, trains are at 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm, 8:00 pm.
For an additional $10, the train tickets are changeable and refundable. I can even change it on the same day for no additional cost up to 30 minutes prior to departure. Any thoughts on time? The 5:00 pm train is about $100 per person, but fine, at this point.

I love trip planning! Just not this part. :/

Thanks all!

Atocha Cercanías and Puerta de Atocha are the same station. The Cercanías is the light/commuter rail system in Madrid, and from the airport you can take either C-1 or C-10 to Atocha. The transfer is within Atocha station, from the Cercanías platforms to the main concourse (around five minutes or less). One thing to note is that for high-speed trains in Spain you need to put your bags through a metal detector, and the queues to do so at Atocha can be a bit chaotic. I would plan to arrive at least an hour before the train is scheduled to depart; boarding usually opens 20-30 mins ahead of departure anyway, so if you're early you can usually just get straight on the train. Madrid to Granada is something like 4 hours. If you're landing at 2:05pm I would personally go for the 6pm train to be safe.

i am looking into flying from JFK to Seville with a 55 minutes layover at Madrid via Iberia (stay a couple of days at Seville) and then take a train to Granada.
The questions is
1) is 55 minutes doable for transfer?
2) do i have to go through Immigration and get my luggage?
