We are headed to Lyme Regis for a night. Any tips for places to stay/eat would really be appreciated.......

Ljyoung: Some (hopefully) gebtle advice. You have asked about staying in Lyme Regis, Cornwall, Bath/Wells, the Cotswolds, N. Wales, Blackpool, the Lake District, Oban, Ft William, Pitlochry and Durham. Most for 1 or 2 nights. This is a VERY ambitious itinerary. It is hard to get the "big picture" with all the fragmented threads.

How long are you planning for this trip - 2 weeks?, 3 weeks?, 10 days?. If you would just lay out your potential itinerary in one post we could all give you better advice.

For instance Oban as a destination is one thing, but Oban as a base for Mull/Iona is completely different.

You are planning on covering a LOT of territory - if we knew what sorts of things you want to see and how long you have we could help more . . . .

janis, I've noticed this as well about this poster; I don't think he/she has done ant research of his/her own. Or so it appears.

Janis: 1st let me thank you for your thoughtful reponse to my questions. 2nd, thank you for helping me to navigate the site in order to get back to ALL of the questions I've asked. I'm hoping you will check back in order to receive my thanks.
As far as my itinerary - maybe I am being too ambitious. As I've mentioned we have 2 girls - ages 9 & 13, and we are attempting to take in the UK w/in 16 days. My research has lead me to the following itinerary ( as it stands right now). I have read through Rick Steve's Bookas well as Fodor's ( found this site ) and others to a lesser degree ( just in case you were wondering Tuck H!! ):
Lyme Regis (1 night )
Wells (2)
N. Wales (2)
Lake District (2)
Oban or Fort William (2)
Pitlochry (1)
Durham (1)
Cotswolds (2)
London (3)
So, crazy or do you think we could manage it OK? Again, thanks a million. If you want any tips re: the SWest or Hawaii - give me a buzz ( [email protected] )

Now that you lay out your whole itinerery - it is waaaay too ambitious.

Look at a map of the UK - you are traveling from somewhere (presumeably London) down to Lyme Regis, then up through the whole country and back down to London in less than 2 weeks. And then ending up w/ 3 days in London.

You are staying 2 nights in a few places which is a good thing - but otherwise you will spend most of your time sitting in a car. I cannot think two children will cope very well watching the world go by for 13 days from the backseat of a smallish car on winding roads.

To make it work better and get to most of the places you want:

Skip Lyme Regis and Wells - They are both really lovely but are out of the way.

-2 nights in the Cotswolds,
-2 nights in N wales,
-2 nights in the Lake District
-2 nights in central Scotland near Stirling, or 2 nights in the Borders
-It appears you don't want to visit Edinburgh - but you might want to consider 2 nights there,
-1 night in Durham
-1 night in York
-4 nights in London (or 6 nights if you do'nt stay in Edinburgh).

This is still a crazy itinerary but at least a little more doable than your original plans.

Janis: Thank you for the critique of my itinerary. Sounds like I'll just have to plan on a return trip to the UK in order to take it all in!

Janis: If you return I've noted a "revised Itinerary" at the thread - "Janis/UK Itinerary". If you have time take a look. THX.
