Luggage theft in Portugal

Just returned from a wonderful 10-day trip to Portugal. The weather was beautiful and we loved the country and the people. It would have been a perfect vacation except that on day 3 all our luggage was stolen from the trunk of our locked rental car in Alcobaca as my husband and I toured the mosteiro. Luckily, we had our passports and credit cards with us so the thieves only got everything else. We learned that this has happened repeatedly in Alcobaca, and the thieves target Fords. The locks are apparently easy to jimmy. So beware! Actually, we found traveling with all remaining possessions in a small paper bag was liberating (no wardrobe decisions). But it did raise eyebrows when we checked into the pousadas.

This is terrible. Glad you were able to "make lemonade" from an unfortunate experience and that you were not hurt. Thanks for the heads up.

Talk about traveling light! Sorry for the incident, but you should be able to dine out on that story for a long time.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln ---- Please tell us about the rest of your trip.

Sorry for the incident. Alaways make sure not to opent the trunk of the car once you are parked unless you are leaving. Do not leave anything inside the car.
TDuette, this is basically the worst that can happen to you in Portugal. Very low rate of violent crime, but petty theft is not unusual.
Beware and you will be fine.
