luggage in athens

We will be arriving in Athens in the morning by plane, and will be taking a ferry to Crete in the evening. What we would like to do is go from the airport to Athens, maybe get on a sight seeing bus for an hour or two and then take a bus or train out to the ferry. Where in Athens would we get off the bus or metro from the airport and be able to stash our luggage for a few hours and also be near some sightseeing?

The #95 airport bus ends up at Syntagma Square. The Metro will stop at Syntagma then Monastiraki. As far as I know there are no businesses nearby for stashing your bags. What will work is to take the #96 Airport<>Piraeus bus or the Metro to Piraeus and stash your bags at a "left luggage" business nearby. They exist. Then you can take the Metro to Monastiraki and have a look through the Plaka and/or the Acropolis before taking the Metro back to the ferry dock.

Thank you. That's what we originally thought about doing i but someone told us that it would be a waste of time to go all the way out to Piraeus and then back again into Athens. We will do exactly as you suggest. One other question. Are there restaurants near the docks in Piraeus,do you know?

Yes, restaurants and hotels to accomodate those who prefer to stay close to the docks for an early-morning departure.

Yes, there IS a left-luggage place right off Syntagma Square, at Pacific Travel, 26 Nikis St, just off Mitropoleos (Sp?) St. It's open 9am-8pm or 9-2 on Sundays. For 6 hrs it costs you 4.5E for a medium-size bag. I got this useful bit of info from the helpful Traci diRegula on the "About" bb. FOr details, the URL is www.pacifictravel.gr/

PS: I have a similar itinerary in the works for next May and also wanted to take the overnight ferry, but my companions don't want to so we're flying Aegean.. maybe another time!
